Hodges and Rowe take wins at 2014 Engen Volkswagen Cup opener

2014 Engen Volkswagen Cup: Zwartkops – Sheldon van der Linde

Mathew Hodges and Daniel Rowe emerged as winners of the opening rounds of the Engen Volkswagen Cup circuit racing series at the 2014 championship at Zwartkops Raceway, Pretoria on 1 March. As is often the case, the drivers delivered an exciting first pair of races, with a few surprises thrown in for good measure.

Dewald Brummer and Rowe set the early pace in qualifying in their Volkswagen Polo Vivo race cars, with Hodges coming in behind them. For 2014, Hodges is competing in the ‘Masters’ category for drivers over the age of 27, and he hasn’t slowed down. Starting on pole position, he won the first race and came fifth in race two. Hodges is third in the championship standings.

An on-track battle with Brummer saw Rowe defeated, finishing third, handing second place in race one to his foe. But, he soon emerged victorious, taking the chequered flag in a very wet race two, from a sixth place starting position on the grid. Brummer suffered bad luck – a fuel pump problem saw him fall down the order to finish 17th from a pole position start.

Zwartkops was a baptism of fire for 14 year-old Sheldon van der Linde (brother of 2012 Engen Volkswagen Cup champion Kelvin van der Linde), who put in good qualifying performance, ending the second race in second place and even taking the lead during proceedings. Van der Linde didn’t escape unharmed, though, as a close battle with Shaun La Resérvée shattered the driver’s side window of the number 16 Polo Vivo.

Other newcomers to the 2014 Engen Volkswagen Cup championship are Christopher Shorter, Michael Gibson, Shayur Harpal, Anthony Lessing and John Craig. Each had varying levels of success, but the start of the season proved successful with every starter on track at the end of the eight laps to cross the finish line. Round two at Killarney in Cape Town is on 29 March.

Perfect pairing – Polo Vivo and Polo named 2013 South African top-sellers

2010 Volkswagen Polo Vivo

A popular, perfect pairing. That’s how the Volkswagen Polo Vivo and Polo 6R can be seen during 2013. Named South Africa’s top-selling cars last year, the duo sold almost 64,000 units between them, helping Volkswagen Group South Africa deliver over 9.7 million vehicles.

The Volkswagen brand sold 83,627 units in the country alone, with 35,041 Polo Vivos finding new homes, while 27,953 fifth-generation Polo 6Rs left dealer showrooms. Both cars are produced locally at Volkswagen’s Uitenhage factory, consistently top the sales charts, and account for nearly 14 per cent of the local market.

Volkswagen Group South Africa ended 2013 as the market leader of the passenger car segment for the fifth consecutive year with the total sales of 102,962 units, up 3.9 per cent. This gave Volkswagen Group South Africa an impressive overall market share of 22.9 per cent.

Volkswagen’s passenger car sales growth of 3.9 per cent was more than double the total passenger car market growth of 1.8 per cent in 2013.

The Polo Vivo was launched in March 2010 as an entry-level model for the South African market, replacing the Series 1 Golf-based CitiGolf, and is available as a three or five-door hatchback and four-door booted saloon with 74bhp/84bhp 1.4-litre and 103bhp 1.6-litre petrol engines.

Costing from R132,200 for the base-model 1.4 hatchback to R171,000 for the top 1.6 Polo Maxx, the 2013 Polo Vivo is based on the revised version of the Series 4 Polo (9N3), built from 2005 to 2009. The fifth-generation Polo (6R) is available as a three and five-door hatch, in addition to the four-door Polo Sedan.

Polo Vivo helps Volkswagen Group South Africa record its best monthly sales

2013 Volkswagen Polo Vivo Maxx

According to the latest figures released by NAAMSA, the Polo Vivo was once again the top-selling car in South Africa. A total of 3574 Polo Vivos found new homes in July 2013. Yet again, its younger brother, the Polo 6R followed it, with 2618 units sold putting it in second place. The new Golf GTI also added to Volkswagen Group South Africa’s success – 477 examples were sold in its first month to market. Total Golf sales in South Africa last month were 908. When all brands were tallied up, Volkswagen Group South Africa sold 10,613 units in July, capturing a 24.4 per cent market share.

‘The market results reflected the on-going positive demand for new vehicles. They were further boosted by a relatively higher number of selling days in July as well as the rental car demand which accounted for 15.4% of the passenger car market,’ said Mike Glendinning, Director Sales and Marketing at Volkswagen Group South Africa.
