EXCLUSIVE: Is this the first
customer new Polo GTI in the UK?
It may be raining outside, but here’s something to brighten all prospective new Polo GTI owners’ moods. Is this the first customer 2010 Polo GTI in the country? Our entry reporting on the first UK magazine road tests of the new hotshot Polo has become something of a mini-forum, with Polo GTI-owners-to-be who have placed orders with their local Volkswagen retailers commenting about the various build stages of ‘their’ cars. It seems that the latest Polo GTI is something of a hot ticket right now, and prospective buyers can wait anything between 12 weeks and 6 months for cars to arrive. Our special correspondent collects his car tomorrow and it’s pictured here in the retailer’s parking lot, resplendent in its Flash Red paint and protective polythene. In something of an exclusive, we hope to bring you the proud new owner’s first impressions over the next few days.
Wow! The new GTI looks amazing. Love the shape and the colour – am deeply envious of your special correspondent.
Well done John! It looks great, even with the protection on it!
Ooh Spirit VW… Hmm, I guess I’m not far from you if one day you want to take out an excited passenger 😉
Top of the class Court, Spirit it is. Sure come and take a look.
Car looks perfect! Hope you have fun with that mate – get a video up if you can, although I imagine you are out in it right now 😛
My build week was 38, meant to be with me by the end of October? Not gonna hold my breath just yet. LOL
Taken delivery of the car. Brilliant. As soon as you sit in the cabin it feels as though they have shrink-wrapped the new Golf GTI around you. The previous model of Polo GTI I owned never felt like that. This new beast is a class above other superminis. On the road it feels self-assured and the power is there if you really need it. VW always seem to use a less is more policy when it comes to styling but this baby certainly turns heads. The supermini has grown up thanks to VW.
Glad you’re pleased John, and that it was worth the wait. Thought it might feel like a mini Golf GTI, which is a great car in itself. Who knows, it might be the start of something… The previous 9N3 GTI press car I had never really felt the money it was, but the 6Rs do feel a class above everything else. Look forward to more words and pics.
Sounds great John! Ooooh… I can hardly wait for mine to show up!
I can’t wait to see your impressions after you’ve had it for a few days… It’s lovely!
Can you confirm that it comes with the fancier MFD like this: http://i772.photobucket.com/albums/yy3/bubuskey/IMG_3713.jpg as opposed to one like this: http://i682.photobucket.com/albums/vv187/kripstoe/DSC00063_2.jpg
Even though both the SEL and the GTI both have Midline MFD listed in the standard features, all the pics of LHD GTIs have the fancy MFD as they have the extra fuel and temperature dials that no other Polo has.
Looks great. How are you finding things with the DSG gearbox?
Would be cool if you could post some additional pictures when you have the chance.
Happy driving – Al
Hi everyone,
Will get some more pics up as soon as possible. Been having to much fun. Going down a storm with people. Lots of double takes from other drivers 🙂 Glad I went for the LED daytime running lights, they make it. Also went for the touch screen radio which gives the cabin a hi-tech feel. Sounds really good too. Car well insulated from outside noise.
Bad news is there is no Bluetooth phone answering capability, which is just plain crazy. I have multimedia interface sockets so why no Bluetooth. Nuts. When you start the engine it almost sounds like a 3-litre, nice.
Alan – the DSG box Alan is a dream to use, don’t think I’ll go back to manual now. MFD does a number of things, but doesn’t look quite like pic 1 or 2 that you posted Court. Certainly does not have the fancy petrol gauge graphic you show.
http://twitpic.com/2umzf8
When you get yours you won’t be able to leave it alone, I can’t!
Brilliant that’s the MFD like my 1st pic – that’s a good thing. You can do so much more with it.
As you have the RCD 510 you can add Bluetooth very easily: http://fiscon-mobile.com/products/rns_510.php
John – sounds brilliant and like the car is receiving a lot of attention.
Roll on March…
After viewing this article I got impatient and called my dealer about my GTI’s progress and I have been told that if anybody ordered a panoramic roof it is likely to be delayed until Q1 next year. He also told me that if you ordered your car before end of August, VW will pay the VAT increase. And mine is due to be built week 47.
MY CAR IS ON THE BOAT!!!!!! WOOOHOOO!! 😀
Great news Rory! I’m certainly enjoying mine and I somehow think you will too. It’s a dream to drive and really looks the business up close. It’s very responsive and the engine has a lovely pitch to it. Let us know when you get yours.
Thanks John, I’ll be sure to link up some photos – though, I believe ours are exactly the same spec! RC510, Xenons and Flash Red is all I specified I believe? I can’t even remember!
Quick question, are any of you guys on active forums on the Polo GTI topic? I struggle to find any!
There’s not much about Rory. I’ve been talking about it for months, but without the actual model in the country no one can actually give their considered views on it. That’s why we’ve all latched on here I reckon.
I’m really enjoying polodriver.com though, the magazines are very impressive. Quality photos and journalism by Rich.
I just ordered the RCD310 stereo as I’ll be fitting the RNS510 navi and factory Bluetooth when it arrives.
Shame, I thought the audience for the Polo would be much larger. Has every reason to be, hot Polos since the G40 have been mostly frowned upon as it’s not a “proper” GTI – hope this new one can make the vital change.
I had just clocked onto polodriver.com in the past week or so and have been keeping up with John and his order – looks like it is the best source for the latest news!
Hmm, you can probably tell this is my first VW (second car to be fair though :() so I am not up-to-date with the lingo. I know I have the touchscreen radio – not too sure on the code now as you have fired two numbers out that don’t resemble mine in the slightest! 😛
John, one question I have is – How is the blip on the throttle when you down shift?
Thanks chaps… makes it all worth the effort!
Here’s a link to another magazine from a previous incarnation testing the 9N3 Polo GTI: http://issuu.com/richgooding/docs/vw_polo_register_newsletter_26
Thanx for that Rich. Makes interesting reading.
The 1.4 Twincharger with DSG is quite a heavy set-up so it’s very impressive for the 6R GTI to weigh 14kg less than the 9N3 GTI especially with the improved safety features of the 6R.
I thought about ‘downsizing’ to the last Polo GTI for my previous company car in 2007 but it just didn’t feel right when I compared it to the Golf GTI Edition 30 I ended up getting. One of the things that put me off was the old 1.8T as the emissions were almost the same as the Golf and that had 80hp more and obviously a size up. Not a chance this time though. The 6R has a fantastic air of quality and get a lot of people to ‘downsize’.
Talking of which – have you seen the £13k Golf Twist? Limited run with the 1.4 engine. Almost the same spec and price as a Polo 1.4 SE, but will be here within a month or so – that should appease some prospective Polo purchasers who wont wait 6 months for delivery.
Hi Rory,
In answer to your question one word…sweet. 🙂
The whole set up is a joy, I could drive around in it all day. The car has one or two nice touches which you’ll discover.
Expect to get some looks when you get yours. Think there should be a large group shot of all first Polo GTI owners with their cars.
A group shot? That would be cool. Can I be there to record it?
🙂
Group shot, I like it! However, I’d make it difficult as I am in the Highlands 🙁
I am getting far too excited about the car coming, pretty sure it’s not good for me! 😀
Hi Rich,
Yes I was hoping you’d take the publicity shots. 🙂 Doing the work of VW UK I reckon. Just put mine away in the garage for the night. ‘parting is such sweet sorrow’ as the Shakepeare line goes. 🙂
I envy you Rory in the highlands, all those miles of open roads. Will be a blast.
I have a 50 mile commute to work in the morning. Great combination of long straights and twisty bends – my commute is truly a great road. What will make it better is they are re-laying all the surfaces – it was meant to be 😀
Hi John,
Glad to hear that you are enjoying it! Could you tell us if it has headlight “spray washers” for the Bi-Xenons headlights as it looks like it in the photo?
It’s an EU requirement to have washers and auto-levelling system with Xenon headlights.
Hi BJ,
Yes, Court is right about the regs. The washer system does indeed look like the ones used in the promo pics. I had the system on the last Polo GTI to have Xenons, 2000 model. These however are a little bit more automatic in that they wash the lights once the ignition has been switched on for the first time, then every fifth time the windscreen washer system is used.
Other nice touches… LED lights change in their intensity depending on what other lights you have on. Electric windows can be closed with the remote control key fob, 2007 Polo GTI didn’t do this. Speedo and rev dials light up on their own once the ignition is turned on and vary in their intensity according to outside light or whatever lights you have switched on.
Thanks John. If you do get around to having Bluetooth fitted for a phone do tell what you decided on in the end and how it integrates….?
Thanks John for giving us GTI owners (in waiting) your thoughts, if you have time some pics would be appreciated. I have been told week 43 (unconfirmed), cannot wait…
Cheers.
Hi BJ
You’ve got 3 options.
1. Something like a Parrot/Nokia kit. Easy to install, cheap, works great as long as you use the handset to dial numbers. £50 for the kit. £20 for the cable.
2. The Fiscon kit. About £300. Integrates with the touchscreen RCD/RNS 510 stereo and also displays in the MFD display. Very good, and works with most phones.
3. The factory kit. Just about the same price as the Fiscon with similar features, but up until the very latest version would only work with Nokia phones that use the rSAP bluetooth profile.
The latter 2 options also need the car coding with VCDS after installation.
I’ve got my old Nokia CK-7W kit out my old Golf ready to go in the Polo. Going to see how I get on with that before I consider fitting the Fiscon/Factory kit.
Hi Court,
Thanks. As mentioned in the other thread I am planning to go with the VW OEM option as it would integrate seamlessly and discreetly, as per the setup in our Golf with the RCD510 (which has so far connected to Nokia, Sony, LG and Samsung phones perfectly).
Its puzzling why its not an option on UK Polo GTIs…..it can’t be a space or technical issue as the Germans can have it, but whatever the reason, VW UK doesn’t seem inclined to divulge it……..as far as I can tell!
I am curious regarding the Fiscon kit though, considering you mentioned its about the same costwise, does it do all the VW OEM kit does, including being able to be operated by, say, the MFS wheel phone controls if it were retrofitted in the GTI…and more?
Here’s the product page of the Fiscon:
http://fiscon-mobile.com/products/rns_510.php?brand=vw
People seem to really rate it on the many, many VAG forums.
If you haven’t got the MFSW you can control it from the wiper stalk as well as the touchscreen of the RCD/RNS 510.
OK, so it may not be as good as the latest VW OEM kit then.
No, I think the latest VW system is the best around, I think it was a great solution for the Apple fans for the last few years as the iPhone doesn’t support rSAP. The latest VW version has the standard handsfree profile so should be great.
It’s unbelievable in 2010 that you can’t spec factory Bluetooth in a car that only came out 12 months ago.
Frankly, it’s unbelieveably that Volkswagen UK shortchanged ALL UK buyers by not allowing us the Bluetooth phone option…….WHY?!!
Whoops! should read… “it’s unbelieveable that etc. etc.”
Perhaps someone has a direct line to Chris Craft, the Director of VW UK at VW HQ in Milton Keynes…….but even then I wonder if it would do any good as emails and calls have fallen on deaf ears up to now.
John, I was also wondering if you had the climate option fitted? I recall mention in one of the reviews, something about the screen colours of the climate panel and that of the RCD510 screen not matching…….could you perhaps shed any light on that at all?
http://twitpic.com/2vrug2
http://twitpic.com/2vrujq
As promised a while ago, a couple of pics.
Re the Bluetooth debate, everyone is perplexed over the issue as to why we can’t have it. I would rather have a factory fit than have my dash messed around with now.
Don’t worry about the typo mistakes I’ve made a few. I can spell, honest. 🙂
Well, my mate in Berlin is friends with the guy who was VW UK finance director but the guy has taken a post abroad. My said friend couldn’t believe Bluetooth wasn’t in the car, knowing the Germans have it. I may get him on the case when I next talk to him.
Yes BJ, climate option fitted. They don’t match but I can’t say I find it too disturbing. The pic of my dash is on here. Does that help?
Here’s a pic of it in the dark.
http://www.motor-talk.de/bilder/polo-v-gti-g26409916/29-i203576015.html
Thanks guys, it’s hardly noticeable, guess they have to nitpick something in a review……….!
Yes, asking an awkward “simple question” at the top might help in determining why we can’t have Bluetooth in the UK.
uh-oh…
OK, one option I did not specify on my car was a MFSW – does this eliminate the MFD? If not how do I control the MFD, I assume by one of the stalks??
Dont worry Rory! The MFD is controlled by buttons on the wiper stalk – it’s been the same way on VWs for the last 30 years, except it was called an MFA back in the early days.
Phew!! I don’t know VW all that well really… :S
Hi chaps
John – would be very excited to take the pictures of you all – you’ve all certainly helped to put the website on the map! 🙂 Latest pictures of the car look great. We could even make another mini-magazine out of it, cars and owners’ privacy protected if necessary!
BJ – have asked my contacts in VW’s UK press office about the Bluetooth thing, will chase as it’s been a week. I don’t know if it’s the same one you’re all talking about (my 1994 Coupé GT doesn’t even know what electric windows are), but there is a Bluetooth add-on kit in the latest Polo accessories brochure I picked up this morning from my dealer in Chelmsford. Part no 000 051 473 A, £230.00, classed as Bluetooth Touch Phone Kit. Looks like a pop-up type screen attached near the radio unit, so uglier than one that’s integrated. Can’t see the Bluetooth option in my German Polo GTI brochure dated April 2010, but fully believe it’s there and available.
Rich
That kit is an unbranded version of the Bury CC9060. It’s not a bad price for fully fitted at a VW dealer. If you were to fit it yourself you’d need the kit which is approx £120 delivered from various internet retailers plus the ISO to Quadlock converter for the VW stereo approx £20. If you think that it would take a VW tech .75 to 1 hour to fit it then the £90 extra is not bad value.
I myself would spend 1.5h fitting it myself and put the 90 beer tokens back in my wallet.
Great video here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HbjWSziMZZ8
Shame I can’t speak German! Incidentally that’s the exact car that VW UK showed to the press a couple of months ago.
Surprised they didn’t rub our noses in it by getting him to answer the phone while on the move. 🙂
Chaps
This is the official response from Volkswagen UK regarding the delivery delays and also the Bluetooth availability:
‘Demand is – as you report in your forums – high for the Polo GTI. We do have a good number of cars scheduled for production this year but supply is not as free as we would like. We are attempting to manage customers’ expectations and anyone with a real concern should contact their retailer who will be able to give an indication of delay or delivery time so an informed decision can be made.
A number of factors as well as high demand are impacting on supply – including some issues at our South Africa production facility (now resolved but causing some delay on Polos in general) as well as a new computer system at head office and throughout the network which is responsible for production, ordering etc. While this was all planned for and on the whole went smoothly, there are still some glitches which we are having to manually overcome – which obviously takes time.
With regards to the Bluetooth, we aren’t currently able to offer a factory fitted solution that would be compatible for phones in the UK. We have stressed the need for this and hope that this can be addressed in the not too distant future. In the meantime, customers can have Bluetooth via the accessory touch kit.’
I think the company is doing all it genuinely can regarding the delays, but the Bluetooth option is puzzling. But then I don’t know the ins and outs of technical specifications, so am not in a very good position to comment. At least now you have an official response, if not the one you were all hoping for.
Hi Court
Great video, thanks for the link. Might use it in the next few days.
From my GCSE and part-time German, I can make out the following:
– The Polo GTI is the presenter’s winnings in the casino.
– 50,000 DM for a Polo?
– 1.4-litre engine makes 180PS with super and turbochargers, all over the front axle and with XDS.
– Seats are ‘super-cool’ and hold you well.
– ‘No car for the visitor’, ‘Makes for a lot of fun’.
– Top-quality interior.
– The Polo GTI gave the presenter a lot of fun when he was driving it round the track, regardless of the time.
– Classless, you can take it everywhere and use it every day. It’s ‘cool’.
I think the figures and on-screen graphics speak for themselves.
Incidentally, I don’t know what the make-up of the LHD press cars were that came over to the UK. I know there were three, and I know that one was red (WOB-NP 123, featured in CAR magazine among others) and one was white (WOB-NP 107, in the PistonHeads drive and most likely the car used for the VW UK press shots, but with a UK registration number). So, ‘124’ could well have been the third. It’s certainly the one in all the early official press shots from Germany:
They were only here for a couple of weeks – I went to a VW driving day just after they’d gone back to Germany. 🙁
You’re right of course, I know I’d seen the 124 in pics somewhere, but all the tests have been 123.
It’s a shame you couldn’t get to that Milbrook day… they seem to have let any idiots in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ij5zphbRj8c
So what you’re saying Rich is that the ‘K3 VWW’ car is a LHD?
That makes perfect sense now looking at the pics here:
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/EDITORIAL/slideshow/staticslideshow.html?decorator=none&folder_name=volkswagen_polo_gti_review&total_image=15&image_start_name=gti_&caption=Volkswagen%20Polo%20GTi&pageNumber=1&hitboxtag=Volkswagen_Polo_GTi_show_page_1&hitboxcap=editorial_slideshow_back_page&slidePageType=carreviews&adArea=&description=true
I was confused as all the external pics show a RHD car, but the inside is LHD – so can we presume that VW UK have made mirror image number plates so when reversed display RHD? Brilliant!
No, that can’t be right as the rear pics show the exhaust and fuel filler on the proper side of the car. Move along, nothing to see here apart from the crazy ramblings of a fool who can’t wait for his car.
Hmm, Sounds like a case for Miss Marple! 🙂
Seems we’re getting stiffed in the UK again!
You can now order the “Detroit” Alloy wheels in 17″ on the German configurator for €150.
These I believe are what we call in the UK “Monza Shadow” and are the 18″ option wheel on the Golf GTI Mk 6.
In fact, they were actually on the Polo GTI on the VW stand in Geneva earlier in the year:
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_3XlcZOq3xK0/S8i2k2-mZPI/AAAAAAAAAPg/iWv_4Ia4z2o/2012%20Volkswagen%20Polo%20GTI.jpg
Yes Court, I spotted those at the Geneva launch. Would have liked them as an option.
NOOOO!!! That was the only one option I really wanted too 🙁
Why is the UK market being shafted so much, surely we were not the smallest consumer for the Polo GTI?
Well depending on if it’s a private purchase or not, you should be able to contact your dealer and start talking about fitment at PDI as there’s obviously a part number for them. You can get the tyres swapped over and take the Monzas home with you.
I think they’re be quite a market for 17″ 5×100 Monzas for the 9N, 9N3, Golf Mk 3 GTI drivers and all the Golf Mk 4s who can’t put the 5×112 fitment Golf Mk 5 Monzas on.
If I had a 9N3 GTI with the 16″ Monzas I’d bite your arm off for them.
Chaps, just back into town… and seen Rich’s post from VW UK and the rest… so is it: “No phone, no wheels and no leather!”
Not quite.
The VW Bluetooth hardware required to allow voice and touchscreen control with the RCD and RNS 51O radio is the GSM antenna (plug in, under dash), Microphone #3B0 035 711B, Bluetooth interface #5N0 035 730C and the VW voice command cable. Swapping the wheels over at PDI is a good idea but at a loss about how to get the Alcantara leather.
Once again Volkswagen UK is absolutely useless regarding customer service. Talk about not being able to organise a soiree in a brewery! Blatantly stating, “…non compatible with phones in the UK etc…”.
As stated previously we have a new Golf Match on the drive sporting a RCD 510 with it all fitted and delivered from the factory only last month! It all works in that car. Have we switched all switched to some strange new mobile phone system in the past few weeks?
It now begs the question, are VW UK being economical with the truth or are they just plain incompetent? Thank goodness I bought it as an additional “toy” otherwise I’d be rather cross!
No, not mirror image number plates Court, just flipped images – the fuel filler is on the same side on all the press pictures of RHD drive cars it turns out. So, maybe it *is* a RHD car after all, although it’s strange how they appeared just after ‘WOB-NP 107’ was in the country… If you look at the picture here, the scenery is even similar to that with K3 VWW. By the way, ‘NP’ seems to stand for ‘New Polo’? In 2006, the CrossPolos in Nice were all ‘WOB-CP XXX’.
Interesting about the Monza Shadows. Also in this picture:
BJ – my contacts at Volkswagen UK are usually very reliable, but I they seem to be on the case. Maybe it’s mounting points, maybe it’s something else, who knows. I know it’s disappointing (even more so when it’s on your Mk 6 Golf), but of course that won’t help the select group of you who already have cars on order.
I think it’s a conspiracy by VW UK worried about the Polo hitting Golf GTI sales. I just love a bit of paranoia in the afternoon. 🙂
It doesn’t really detract from the anticipation of awaiting and enjoying the car Rich, it’d just be nice if they came clean and said, “yes, we cocked up… will make it an available option, but here’s what you need to fit it in the meantime…” rather then the party fob-off line.
Are the wheels the same as standard fit, bar the painted surfaces in the holes?
It looks like it BJ, thats why they’re only €150 upgrade. The tyres are the same at 215/40R17.
Oooh, I nearly forgot, it’s not just the painted holes, the Shadow’s face is polished then lacquered and not painted like the Monzas.
If they’re anything like the old 18″ Monza IIs off the Golf Mk 5 then the lacquer gets damaged within a year, moisture creeps in and completely ruins them after 3 years. VW have always seem to have had an issue with polished rims. The Mk 4 Santa Monica rim was the same, as well as the Mk 3 Anniversary rim.
I like this comment from one of the GTI forums:
‘They did it with the Mk 3 Anniversary… wheel rims. Then again on the Mk 4 Anniversary… wheels and centre caps. Then again on the Mk 5 GT/GTI… wheels and centre caps. And now on the Mk 6. VW don’t learn that polished type wheels and UK roads don’t mix.’
Perhaps they have now learned this and decided that it’s not worth the warranty claims.
You know, looking at the picture above, I now reckon the Monza 2s don’t suit the car – perhaps because they are 18″ and look too big? Not too fussed about them now :S
On another note… WHERE THE **** IS MY CAR??? LOL. I’m far, far too anxious!
Talking of the GTI forums… there’s a guy who’s got a supply of the latest VW Blueooth kits. Part number 3C8 035 730A This should include everything you need to retro-fit.
http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=169384.0
£275. Not a bad price at all considering the factory one on the Golf is £240 and this one will work with ALL phones and not just rSAP Bluetooth profile phones.
Am seriously thinking about Polo GTI. As I understand it there’s no Bluetooth solution other than aftermarket which is a major problem for me as tend to do work con calls whilst on the road.
However have found aftermarket supplier who will install RNS 510 and Bluetooth stuff for £900 inc. Is this the best option? Conscious that the factory RNS 310 is circa £800 alone and the 510 must be better?
Price with Dealdrivers is £1,800 below list and I know they’re good, so have asked dealer to see how close they can get. If I order with panoramic roof what is expected lead time?
Hi, there is a VW option for the Bluetooth (Genuine Accessories brochure here), which is part no 000 051 473 A, £230.00, classed as Bluetooth Touch Phone Kit. Looks like a pop-up type screen attached near the radio unit, so uglier than one that’s integrated.
But another one of the chaps who visits here regularly says: ‘That VW kit is an unbranded version of the Bury CC9060. I myself would spend 1.5h fitting it myself and put the 90 beer tokens back in my wallet.’
Read all the posts on this thread to help make up your mind.
As for the panoramic roof option, I think it’s probably anyone’s guess. It’s worth asking a dealer, but many people on this thread seem to have been quoted varying delivery times, for standard-ish cars. Recent VW ordering problems and strikes have meant the delays have gotten unintentionally longer.
Alski
Try and find out what version of the Bluetooth module they will be supplying. There are lots of versions out there and some don’t work with the latest round of smartphones.
Ask the version of the RNS 510 too. The latest version has LED backlighting and normally runs about £100 more than the B version with standard backlighting.
£900 is not bad value fitted and coded. I’m getting a RNS 510 on delivery myself. You’ll get £100 on eBay for the RCD 310 as a little bonus.
In the UK people have been quoted 12-25 weeks delivery at present. Crazy really.
Any news on Rory’s car I wonder? Should be soon.
I reckon he should have taken delivery by now if it was on the boat 2 weeks ago… Tell us more Rory!!
Nothing to tell yet chaps. Meant to be here by Wednesday, if not my dealer and their main dealer will be getting a roaster of a phone call. The salesman dealing with my car was on holiday last week (of course he can have a holiday but when I have had a £20grand car on order for 6 bloody months I expect more!!) – I am certain the main dealer would not have bothered sending it down if there was no salesman to do the deal, they may have kept it in their showroom up there??
Unfortunately, I did not have the time to go and check as I was on a weekend break (one final blast in the Suzuki really :P)
Rory, getting close, excellent. It’s a lonely place being the only one I’m looking forward to feedback from other drivers. 🙂
My colleague turned up this morning in a courtesy Audi A3 1.8T S-line with DSG so I managed to grab the keys off him at lunch to get a feel for the 7-speed DSG on a powerful motor.
I was very surprised at the amount of creep available. It won’t creep up or hold on a hill like a traditional auto, but for general crawling in traffic it’s just perfect. Do you find similar John?
How much do you use the paddles/sequential? Whenever I put it into manual it just felt odd, almost alien, like a video game as you couldn’t ‘feel’ what gear you were in like a manual. Perhaps its something to get used to over time. When it’s in S mode it really goes, I had to get on the motorway to really give it some juice all the way to 7000rpm.
I was also impressed how early it changes up when tootling around, it’s up into 7th by the time you get to 45mph.
So all in all I was very impressed, and now even more looking forward to the Polo.
Still build week 15/11/10 after the latest update. Not long now!
Hi Court,
It isn’t very hilly where I am so mine hasn’t really been tested. I think though that you are spot on in saying just the right amount of creep for crawling through the traffic. I agree.
At the moment, though I may tell everyone about the flappy-paddles, I find I’m not using them too much. I end up turning down the sound system to hear the pitch of the engine in order to optimise gear change. Yes maybe something to get used to.
In S mode it really does fly, it’s a great deal of fun. Salt flats of Utah would come in handy. 🙂
For the time being, and after a succession of manual cars I’m enjoying just sticking it in drive, interspersed with the odd flappy-paddle moment. Still liking the DSG box, it’s a clever piece of kit.
Get in the car, close the door then turn the key in the ignition… it sounds beautiful.
There is a 5 door black metallic one for sale on the VW website. Mann Egerton of Swindon – £19,995
The new list price of that car is £20,000 on the nose with the Pearl paint and Xenons. Save a sweet £5, bargain 😉
Might pop over on Saturday and have a look if it’s still there as I’m down in Bristol atm.
Also… They’ve done well to get 1100 miles on it, it was only registered on the 19/10/2010!
More than likely a cancelled order, VW dealers were under strict instructions from Milton Keynes to not order any for stock/demo so supply wasn’t further limited… That said, can’t be that hard to use a pseudonym on an order form.
Probably was a cancelled order. If I was a bit closer then I would have went for a nosey. Wonder if a few more will now start to appear…
Mine gets it’s first big run this weekend with a trip up to Manchester. Going to see how it fairs on fuel consumption over longer distances. Previous model GTI was very good, with over 40mpg easily achieved on most runs, unless you floored it everywhere of course.
Have been reading this from the 1st Oct… Tried twice to comment so 3rd time lucky.
Congrats John, read your comments with bated breath. I was told week 43 but just been told pushed back to 46 (unconfirmed), am gutted…
46 is my unconfirmed week too… Unless they’ve bumped me back 3 weeks as well as you 🙁
Welcome to the club!
Hi JCW,
Welcome to the group.
I think the car is in demand, hence some of the reasons for delays. Hang on in there, which I know is easy for me to say, it’s well worth it.
Mine arrives in Fort William tomorrow at 14:00ish…
Booked holidays from work as of next Wednesday so will collect it then. They will keep it in the showroom until then 🙂
Can’t believe I have been waiting 6 months for this, honestly cannot wait to see it up close… highlight of my year!
Fantastic news Rory. Keep us posted. Think you’ll love it.
I placed an order for a Polo GTI at the end of June and the latest unconfirmed build date is now week 2, having previously been week 40 and then week 45. Assuming it takes about five weeks to deliver, then I will have waited about eight months! Having said that, I did order the panoramic sunroof which my dealer tells me is the main cause of the delay.
I am pleased to hear that people are now taking delivery of their cars and that they are happy with them, so I shall just continue hoping and waiting…
That is great news Rory, sure it will be worth the wait.
I’ve been reading these posted comments for the past few weeks, and they´ve been very helpfull. I learn some details that I wasn’t even aware about my future car.
My car is due to arrive at the last week of the year.
Mine is a LHD, because I’m from Portugal, and I have some dificulties finding comments about the Polo GTI in other places, does anyone know alternative ones?
I’ve order black with 3 doors and I can´t wait to put my hands on it 🙂
I like that people who have the car already (like John) have nice things to say about it.
P.S. Sorry about my English 😛
Sorry folks, I am not very technically minded on unloading photos so I’ll give you some links:

Was getting PDI’d tonight when I went over, unfortunately, their computer has broken so they can’t take it off transport mode for me to have a wee blast in it 🙁
Looks great Rory, though more like a CrossPolo with that dropped suspension. 🙂
Seriously though, fantastic news, another one for the possible photo shoot!
Well I went to see it today, and had a few miles in it…
http://i53.tinypic.com/22kpi1.jpg
First thought.. isn’t the engine sound odd? Not what I expected at all. Really growly, nothing like the supercharged R53 Mini.
I gave it some serious beans on a dual-carriageway where it performed brilliantly. The kick down is seriously good, drops from 7th to 4th almost instantly.
I foolishly put it in neutral at the lights, then tried to move off, obv no drive so I panicked and selected the first notch on the selector I could find – reverse! Lets just say the salesman tensed up a lot! Luckily no cars behind – I can only imagine the insurance report… I won’t do that again…
It drives lovely, really solid, just like my old Golf GTI. Can’t wait to get mine!
The only thing I wasn’t impressed with is the piano black inlays of the dash – It’s a horrible finish to keep fingerprints off.
£19995 inc
5-door
Xenons
Pearl Black
DAB on the RCD 310
Total new: £20175
So you’re saving a few quid and it’s available now, rather than February…
Good residuals on a PCP too: over 3 years/36k the final payment would be £8019.
The engine sound is great, one of the first things I noted when I got mine.
Performs brilliantly as a motorway cruiser. I had been on the motorway before but this was the car’s longest journey so far.
My trip up to Manchester was horrendous, obviously there was a mixture of speeds achieved, the car averaged 42.6mpg. On the return journey, which was straight forward and ‘motorway speeds’ possible, this dropped to 40.7mpg. The motorway part of the trip saw the average hover around the upper 30s.
No other GTI spotted on the route either.
That’s some excellent fuel economy there!
I’ve found another video – this time in French…
http://www.wat.tv/video/essai-volkswagen-polo-gti-2qzpf_2flv9_.html
Just been advised by the dealer that my estimated build date has now gone back another six weeks to week eight…
This whole thing is turning a complete disaster!!
My car arrived LAST Friday, everything is in place ready for me to collect. My dealer then tells me that their diagnostic computer has broken and they need that to take it off transport mode. Yesterday, they were going to send it to their main dealer for repair.
Tomorrow there is a specialist coming to “look at it”. I am not sure if this guy can fix it on site or if there will be parts needed for the fix?
So, right now, my car is PDI’d, cleaned, plates on, taxed and insured sitting in their showroom and I can’t do a damned thing about it. I asked if they could “borrow” the main dealers computer (working in the trade I knew it’d be a long shot) to which they said no.
My choices are, put it on the back of a lorry and take it 70 miles to the main dealer, wait until they fix it or cancel the whole process and buy the candy white GTI sitting in the main dealers showroom. HELP!!!!
I am totally gutted about this. 6 months waiting for the car, 11 months wanting the car and it comes down to this. It has completely ruined the whole buying process for me – not even remotely looking forward to the collection now. Don’t get me started on the salesman too…
I have learned a lesson though, never ever buy from this garage again and always go main dealer. It is very likely I’d buy another VW if this turns out to be as good as is speculated and I hoped, yet it does not seem to have occurred to them that they could potentially lose a customer for life!
Really not what I expected – saddens me greatly.
Anyone want my Polo GTI? LOL
Rory – What a fiasco! Think I’d follow the car to the main dealer if tomorrow finds the guy can’t fix the equipment. Don’t cancel the order, it’s a great car! Just cancel the dealer.
Schu, that’s awful… I’d really be considering buying something else. Or buying the one in Rory’s main dealer. It’s a Polo, not a Lambo. If it’s built on week 8 you wont see it till nearly the end of March – that’s 9 months!!! Unbelievable.
Don’t worry Rory, they’ll have it fixed shortly. Surely they wont be able to do any diagnostics on any cars they service so will be costing them real money. If they’re using the VAS system, it’s just a bespoke cased PC with a fancy cable connected to it like most diagnostic computers. All the parts inside are standard PC bits.
In other news I’ve managed to bag an RCD510 for mine if and when it turns up. It was such a bargain I couldn’t refuse! I’m going to stick it in, run it for a few weeks to see if I actually need the RNS510 as however much I like factory nav, it’s something I’d hardly use in reality.
Good point Court. Schu, I don’t know if the vehicle up there is taken but I can certainly give you contact details if you are interested. Don’t know the spec though – just know it’s candy white.
I know in Ford our IDS is nothing special, just a cable like you say for VW. However, I know if my IDS has broken down somehow, I’d be acting a lot quicker as 70-80% of work in a dealership will need that diagnostic system. Warranty is out of the question – serious money would be lost. Might as well send 3 techs home for the day!
John, on the MFD does your instantaneous speed show as KPH or MPH? You know on the small strip just below what you have on the main display? Mine is showing in KPH and I have no idea how to change it :S
It has to show KPH as all UK registered cars have to be able to show MPH and KPH, whereas cars on the continent only have to show KPH.
Until the very latest VW white illumination all cars had KPH and MPH in the dial. They’ve now moved the KPH to the MFD. A bit like Porsche did a few years ago.
The good news is that the dealer will honour the trade-in price agreed four months ago on my current Polo GTI and of course there is VW’s promise regarding the VAT increase. The bad news is that I’m going to be waiting so long for the new car that the current one is going to need two new tyres, its four year service (which will be expensive as I think the cam belt needs changing every four years), an MOT and six month’s tax. These are all things which I wouldn’t have needed to stump up for if the new car was to have been delivered after a reasonable period of time and is why I ordered the new one when I did.
The one I have ordered is in candy white, with almost every option that is available (or seemingly unavailable in the case of the sunroof), so Rory, if you could pass on the details of that one near you I might contact them.
I think I shall email my dealer and VW customer care and ask them if they would consider some financial assistance towards the cost of the tyres, service, etc. I will also ask them why a reputable organisation such as VW cannot give me a definite build date.
Finally, I’ve just looked on VW’s website and there is another used GTI on there – a red one in Ipswich.
So I can’t get instantaneous speed on MFD whatsoever? 🙁
Anyway, car is bonkers. Love it!
Hawco Inverness – 01463 236 111.
So everything came up Milhouse in the end Rory?
You sound like you’re enjoying it anyway… make sure you do!
My lease company only tell me the ETA on the 11th of every month. I’m hoping that the next update they’ll confirm it will be built the week after in Week 46 like they said last month.
Please no more delays!!!
Yep, everything went great. It was well worth the wait! Even with a horn that doesn’t work!! LOL.
Court, I have my fingers crossed for you mate!
Rory, very pleased for you. Happy motoring!
On the MFD mine also shows KPH. The manual refers to changing the display settings, so may be possible to change that.
Have you gone for Xenons and LED’s on your car? I couldn’t see your earlier pics as I’m not on Facebook and it wanted me to sign in to view. 🙁
When I am more used with the car I may have a play about with it.
I went for:
3 door
flash red
winter pack
xenons
touchscreen radio (can’t mind the name).
I foolishly did not opt for the climate control as it was something I never used in my old car. Now I am stuck with rather inelegant dials. Lapse of judgement – clearly not thinking about the digital display 🙁
When the weather clears I can get some real photos up.
So, Rich, when is this shoot? 😀
Wow Rory, great news that you’ve finally got the car. Enjoy! Very jealous of all you 😀
Shoot – no date yet, and don’t know where either. Would be good to have a handful of owners, so when Court’s arrives… Somewhere central in the UK, though? Don’t know where you’re all based.
Schu – glad that the garage will honour the trade in price they agreed. Might be worth trying for the financial assistance. On a note with the current car, Volkswagen Driver magazine are looking for owners to give an opinion for a model profile if you’re interested. Should be around 300 words or so.
Annoyed that the red car is in Ipswich – I moved from there two years ago, although only 45 miles further south, so could have gone to have a look. Another cancelled order? Over 1000 miles and only registered this month!
Yep I can see those photo shoot pics now. Cars lined up front facing the camera, in a semicircle. Some owners resting against the bonnet of their cars, arms folded, some stood next to the driver’s door, and so on… 🙂
On a serious note. Did any of you order darkened glass from the B pillar? I stupidly had thought it was standard on the GTI. W R O N G! I therefore don’t have it and wished I did.
Something like that John! 🙂
Darkened glass – I thought it was standard, but no, optional on SEL and GTI (£250.00), but standard on the Moda! Think VW were going for fashion and style with that one…
It’s only €160 in Germany..
At least it’s something you could have professionally done at a specialist for a good chunk less than £250.
Personally, I was pleased it wasn’t standard, the 2 cars on my drive atm have it as standard and I think it ruins the lines.
Talking of prices, we really do have it good at the moment. In Germany you don’t even get a radio as standard, not even the RCD210!
If you config up to the UK car the price is £20410, and the car in France is £20719. I wouldn’t put it past VAG to be preferring to sell to the Continent right now.
There is a white one for sale now as well in Nuneaton! I am getting frustrated now. Looks great in white.
A decent price even with mileage on the clock. They say it has the RCD310 radio, looks like the 510 to me.
From someone who had the last GTI in white, they look great but need lots of cleaning attention to keep them looking sharp. Hope they throw in a sponge. 🙂
Dammit! That’s my car – what’s it doing there?
Hello!
Can anyone tell me if the LEDs are optional with the xenons or if it’s standard in the GTI?
Hi Nuno,
The LEDs come with the xenon lights, all one option.
Thanks John.
That’s not good news for me, I didn’t order the xenons, those LEDs are one of my favourite details of the car 🙁
But I did order the darkened glass.
Can’t wait for it to arrive…
This darkened glass, I swear it wasn’t there when I spec’d my car :S
Anyway, every now and then (when there is enough people interested) we get a guy up from Glasgow who darkens the glass. Done a few RSs for us and a few sales cars the customer wanted done. My girlfriend recently got a new car, one of the techs got a new car, my car and a few other customers will surely get this specialist up to do darken the back three. Although, I feel the windscreen is pretty dark as it is??
Court, is that really your car? LOL
Rory,
The glass featured on a number of promo vids of the car and is seen on the Autocar video. It wasn’t officially listed as a GTI option, you had to find it by looking in the standard Polo brochure for the other models.
Hope your car is putting a smile on your face. 🙂
No, not really my car, just first white one I’ve seen. Mine is even more basic spec than that car!
After sticking in the RCD510 this will be the next thing on my list..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOwL4Td8Ncs
Easily done by changing the bump stops to Scirocco ones and changing the gas struts to ones off a Mk 1 Seat Toledo (!)
There is a red one, a black one and a white one for sale yet I am still awaiting my GTI to be built… getting really hacked off now. Wondering whether I did the right thing.
I know what you mean. March seems along time away for me! When is it supposed to be here JCW?
Good news for me is that the dealer has said they will pay for the two new tyres, the service and the MoT that will need doing if my car gets further delayed. With them honouring my June trade-in price and with the VAT offer, I’m sure that I’m now doing as well as I can financially. End of March/start of April is still a long wait for the estimated delivery date though…
Alan, was week 43 put back to build week 46 – haven’t the courage to ask if it now confirmed or slipped again…
Can anybody inform me of the time it takes from the build date to arriving at the UK garage? Also how long it takes from the beginning of the build to rolling out the factory door?

JCW, mine had a build date of week 36, Sept 6th. I remember it had left the factory within around 1 week and it arrived at my dealer in the middle of week 39 and I took delivery of it that weekend.
For those interested, from week 45 (today) the Climatronic display now has white illumination rather than the blue.
Thanks for the info John.
Court, does that mean the RCD310 display will be blue and the climatic white?
I’ve got a pic of it, but it crashes polodriver when I try and show it…
I’ll try and break it down…
http :// oi52.tinypic. com / 2eej87m.jpg
Remove the spaces.
I’m not sure about the stereo, it doesn’t list that in the 2011.5 revisions, but you’d think now they’d got rid of the blue from the Climatronic that they’d remove the blue from the RCD 310 (and RCD 210 for our continental friends).
I was thinking I would quite like the xenon lights at they look pretty cool. Do they make much of a difference and are they worth it? Would it be too late to get them added to my order, my car is not expected to arrive until March 2011.
Hi Alan,
The xenons come complete with the LED daytime running lights. Pretty cool. Have to say that mine get a lot of attention from people. I’m pleased I opted to have them on my car. I would have thought that it could delay or even complicate your order if you tried adding them now. Only one way to find out. Personally I think the LED lights make the car stand out.
Doom, gloom and despondency…
Date slipped again to week 47, dealer also not happy (I think he wants my money!). Have still not seen one in the flesh – I must be mad.
Don’t worry too much JCW, you should still get it for Christmas – 47 is my week, well it was when I was last updated on the 13/10. I get my next update on 13/11. Although as it’s a Saturday will I get it tomorrow or Monday?
Fingers crossed it’s good news!
Court, hopefully VW are consolidating RHD GTIs and they build them WEEK 47!
Erk so much for week 47 – just had my update and now it’s a confirmed build week 46 – next week! How odd.
Should arrive at the dealer approx 15th December and I’ll have it delivered to me week commencing 20th December.
Awesome 🙂
That’s great news Court, you must be delighted. Will be worth the wait and will be some Christmas present. There are some nice pics of a white Polo on the uk polos net forum just now!
Great news Court, nice end to the year.
Congrats Court…
Though I am jealous.
We’ll see… I’d like to say I’ll have it on the 20th December, but I’m really trying not to get my hopes up.
Spotted a red one today in Glasgow on my way to work. Was parked in an office car park, so will need to take a nosey later on, if it is still there!
Mine flashed up today ‘Please check your oil’ next to a little graphic of what looks like a genie’s lamp. Hoping it was an anomaly and nothing else. All seems ok under the bonnet.
Otherwise still loving it, a right little firecracker!
I’ve heard of quite a few cars that use a litre of oil in their first 1000 miles when they bed in. I presume when you say everything is ok under the bonnet that the oil level was firmly near the max on the dipstick?
Have topped up the oil. Never had to do that on any new VW before. Oil level on previous GTI never moved. Will monitor the situation closely.
Can you believe the Sales Manager at Mann Egerton Swindon thinks he can get £21,995 for that black GTI I had a test drive in? I wasn’t going to say anything about my experience as they were doing me a favour by letting me drive it, but after seeing it still at the inflated price I feel I should say my piece…
The day before I test drove it the sales guy was dealing with called me up to say there was a problem and his sales manager said it was £21,995 – I forcefully asked what options were on it to make it that price as all I knew about was the metallic, xenons and DAB RCD 310. He called back after checking with said sales manager to say I could have it for £20,000 – oooh £175 off!!
Is there any wonder sales have a bad rep? Surely no one wants a Polo that bad to pay 2k over the odds? It’s hardly a Ferrari 458.
Way overpriced, and hardly loaded with all the options.
Let’s face it buying new cars is a mug’s game anyway from a financial point of view. I always say I won’t do it again, but I do.
Have been following PoloDriver since I ordered by GTI in June (Black metallic, Xenons, DAB 310 etc) to replace my MkV Golf GTI and these comments in particular. Thanks for keeping me and I’m sure many others up to date with what has been happening.
I have just come back from Dorchester after receiving a call on Thursday to say my car has arrived, and after seeing and sitting in it, it everything I was hoping it would be (can’t wait to have a drive). I wasn’t too worried about the radio, but ordered the bluetooth touch phone kit to keep me handsfree.
I was just walking out of the showroom when a display showing the Kenwood Multimedia System caught my eye. Plugged in my IPhone and straight away all my play lists came up, and all my phone contacts were immediately available. It also has Garmin navigation, TV and Parrott Bluetooth. Has anyone had this fitted, and if so, is it as good as it looks?
I don’t think any non-OEM navis look good in VWs. But that’s just my opinion.
Even worse is the price of that Kenwood DNX520VBT you speak of.
For the £1k+ purchase price of the Kenwood I could (and would) buy a RNS-510 Version C and the latest factory Bluetooth kit for it and have it all coded to the car.
P.S. Anyone whose car is being delivered in the next month or so and who has a lot of time on their hands like me can check where the ship that will be picking up their Polo is right now…
It’s called the ‘African Highway’ and currently it’s in Emden in Germany about to leave for Santander to pick up the next batch of Polos that have been built by the Pamplona plant. Including mine 🙂
Here’s a link…
http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/shipdetails.aspx?mmsi=353633000
Once the cars arrive in Emden, they are then loaded onto smaller vessels to get to the UK, like the ‘Neckar Highway’.
http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/shipdetails.aspx?mmsi=212172000
These smaller ships take their cars to Grimsby, Sheerness or Tyne dependent on what part of the country the cars are being delivered to.
Phoned my VW dealer in Bridgwater (yeah, spelled correctly) to be informed my car has already been built… Of course I am ecstatic but they put me through 2 weeks of thinking of canceling the order. If I could show a graph of my emotions this past month it would look like map of the Himalayas. Why do they do this?
So Court, mine will be on the same ship so thanks for the link.
Bet the f**ker sinks…
Court, god knows how you managed to find out about shipping etc…! Impressive!
Spoken to my lease company about adding the bi-xenon headlights, he is going to speak to his contact at VW to see if it will impact on timescale or not. Hopefully not! But will just need to see.
There’s quite a lot of info on many of the VAG forums about ships etc.
Here’s the schedule:
http://www.pwl.de/static/schedules/vwl_hb.pdf
The ship should be leaving today for Santander.
I just this minute got this from my lease company: “An update regarding the progress of the VW Polo we have on order for you. The vehicle has been released from the factory and is currently at the port of exit in awaiting shipment to the UK. Once the vehicle has arrived at the dealers we will contact you to arrange a suitable delivery date.”
Won’t be long until it arrives now, must be a good feeling. Who is your lease company? My guy, came back and said it probably wouldn’t delay the order time by adding the bi-xenon headlights but at the same time they have had problems. Just decided to stick as is, because knowing my luck it would delay it. Roll on March 2011, it seems a long time away…!
Arval is my lease company for my sins 😉
The ship has taken a little detour to Sheerness to do a drop of VAG vehicles from Emden so won’t be getting to Santander till 27th therefore will probably not arrive back into Emden till the 30th.
A sneaky transporter ship called the City of Rome left Santander en route direct to Grimsby yesterday… there’s a good chance our Polos are on that ship!!
Thanks for the info Court, I will cross my fingers…
There is a review in the Sydney Morning Herald of the GTI.
http://smh.drive.com.au/motor-news/first-drive-volkswagen-polo-gti-20101127-18b1p.html
VW is offering a sleek, black interior option of alcantara/leatherette seats ($1900)….
Yes, I really like that interior, you can get it in most European territories too.
Shame, I think the jacara seats and Monza wheels are a bit hackneyed nowadays. I think something like the 17″ Boavista wheels off the SEL would have been great – as long as they were unique to the GTI 😉
PS – The City of Rome is currently doing loops outside Grimsby harbour waiting for a ship from Emden to leave so it can dock. Yay!
Thanks for the tip Alan. Good review, too. That’s where all the right-hand drive cars are going! 😉
Inspired another post too, by clicking through various links from that link: http://www.polodriver.com/polo-2009/polo-named-car-of-the-year-2010-by-drive-and-carsguide/
Will post about the review later in the week.
Them Aussies have finally given me the pictures of a white 3-door without Xenons I require for my desktop, just 2 weeks before I get mine…
http://www.caradvice.com.au/92852/2011-volkswagen-polo-gti-launched-in-australia/
Very aggressive pricing by VW Australia, it should do well.
I see the usual moans in the comments about DSG only and that it wouldn’t see which way a Clio 200 went. But they really do compete in different markets… I can’t see many Clio drivers considering a Polo and vice versa.
They’ve also shown us the first photos of the five-door, too (above and probably the same shots as in your link), and there’s a video here of the unveiling at the Australian Motor Show:
http://player.video.news.com.au/carsguide/#64AOxflsUZMJdvQQL8SWUeD7FqsmjwBe
I agree too, the Clio and Polo are aimed at totally different groups of demographics – a higher-powered Polo be a RS Clio opponent. Golf GTIs aren’t put up against Megane RSs are they? That’s the job of the Golf/’Rocco Rs. But again, 4WD vs FWD – different markets.
I bet you can’t wait Court, not long now! 🙂 The group photo plan is slowly coming together…
Here is a 5 door spotted in Sydney:
http://www.ausmotive.com/2010/09/28/vw-polo-gti-spotted-in-sydney.html
This is the colour I chose… What’s peoples thoughts on the colour?
I love the blue – when I was choosing my Golf GTI last time I was so tempted with the blue. It would have been the colour I’d have chosen, but they said they had a silver one en-route and I don’t have much patience – can you tell?
If I could have had any options that kept me in the monthly budget I’d set myself then I would have had that blue. Looks lovely!
PS – I managed to source a RCD-510 with DAB a couple of days ago at a bargain £200!! Considering it’s £285 for the stereo + £175 for the DAB option I thought I did well. They even threw in £30 worth of brand new internal glass DAB aerial too. I’m very happy 🙂
PPS – The City of Rome docked in Grimsby last night finally. Won’t be long now!
Great Court, glad you like the colour. Think it looks really classy and doubt there will be many about which are that colour. It is a colour which looks better in the flesh.
That is a great deal. Yeah it certainly won’t be long now!
Got e-mailed by a chap from VW magazine today – was asked if my car can be featured in February issue… Let me think… OK!! :p
Now that’s gonna be one famous motor! I think I’ll be picking up a copy…
Wow, that’s great news Rory! Which mag was it? And in what respect, testing, owner profile… Whatever, though, exciting!
Could it be that Volkswagen Driver are finally getting round to test the Polo GTI 1.4 DSG.
As regarding the Shadow Blue Aussie car, I think that is the colour I would go for if I get a Polo. It think it shows off the grille really well.
Yeah, from VW Driver (sorry).
I will be sitting down today and writing my thoughts on the car, I have to have it done by the last week of the month. The chap said it would either be a drivers letter or a feature – either way, my car will be a celebrity. 🙂
Hoping the snow clears so I can get some more decent pictures. :S
That’s good news Rory – known Neil for years and he’ll do a good job. Look forward to seeing it – well done!
As for the colours, I always think a GTI should be red, black, white or silver, the traditional GTI hues going back 30-odd years to the Mk 1 Golf. Never been keen on the blues, but if we were all the same, the world would be a duller place!
I’ve always had a very soft spot for the late Mk 1 GTI metallics namely Helios Blue and Lhasa Green and I mustn’t forget my fav VW car/colour combo of all time – a Mk 2 1992 Golf GTI 16v in Oak Green…
Liking the blue Alan. The first pic looks like a Golf GTI.
I’d be happy to spot any other colour on the roads at the moment. Still only me driving around in mine here in Warwickshire and the West Mids. Going to be a high five moment I think when I spot another. Having said that I don’t see many new Golf GTIs.
Rory, that’s a coup for sure, your Warhol moment. There was me thinking I was the only GTI in the village. 🙂 A coup for ‘Polo Driver’ then to get a group shot of us first new owners. Despite being careful I have my first stone chip… have gone into therapy.
The invasion has started.
Spotted today a new Polo GTI in white. The car was parked in a side road in Stratford upon Avon.
Apart from the demo I drove I still haven’t seen one in the wild… I hope it stays that way till I get mine 🙂
My dealer phoned me up yesterday to say that my car was still pencilled in to be built in week eight. According to him however, VW has sold more cars than they predicted and there are more orders than there is capacity available to build them. Therefore VW UK, VW France, VW Germany, etc are having to negotiate with the VW factory to build their orders. I bet the German (home) market will get top priority too.
I don’t hold out much hope and I feel that my custom is not important to VW. I’m not sure how much of this story I believe (it sounds complicated enough to be true), but I’m getting pretty close to cancelling my order.
Tell you what Schuey, if I was after a Polo GTI as a private purchase and VW were giving me the run around I’d be considering one of the pre-reg Fabia vRS’ on autotrader – there’s at least 25 on there atm.
Cheers John. Sounds a nightmare Schuey, there seems to be no consistency with the ordering process. There is a 5-door red one for sale on VW’s website priced at £18,999.
JCW any word on your car? It’s awful not being able to find out anything till the powers that be send me an update. Like I said, patience is not my strong point.
Arghh.
Update, car is at the port. Tell me something I didn’t know 😉
Court: Nothing my end, I phoned my stealers but all they said was I would take delivery sometime this month.
Now checking my phone every half hour… becoming psychotic!
Still having problems posting.
Court: Did they say which port (Spanish/German/Abbu-Dabi)?
Just pulled the whiskers off my cat! Told you I was psychotic.
Hehe, no it’s in a port in the UK. I presume Grimsby looking at the ships that have been coming and going. I believe that most VAG cars come through Grimsby as Sheerness is mostly for the South-East dealers and the Inchcape dealer network.
It’s all down to how quick the dealer can get the car from the port now…
The whiskers came off my cat not so long ago, looked like someone had cut them on one side!
Court: 2 other bits of information i got from my phone call was that –
a) Being Bristol area my car will be sent from whichever sea port it came in to Sheerness distributor, before transporting out to the garage.
b) The garage receives a fax from the distributor (Sheerness) informing them the car is on its way (this could be 1 hour to 20 hrs depending on the distance).
I take it this must be the Inchcape you referred too.
Bridgwater VW aren’t part of the Inchcape group, but that really sounds like they’re on the ball. Perhaps they use their logistics.
If I had anyway of contacting my dealer they’d be so sick of me!
Actually, that may make sense as Exeter VW is Inchcape. Would be a shame to go all the way from Sheerness to Exeter and not drop off a few cars in Bridgwater. 😉
Court
Bet you can’t wait. How long since you ordered?
I saw a white GTI up at Northfield, Cirencester. Trying to flog it off with £280 off… Bargain, they are so generous!!!
Bang on 16 weeks this week. Not too bad I ‘spose…
Used to take my Golf to Cirencester for service, I liked them very much. It’s a toss up between there and Bath as to where I’ll take the Polo as I won’t use the Bristol dealer. The Bath dealer is great too, the service dept is open till 7.30pm so used to drop the car down after rush hour (and dinner) the night before and pick up a courtesy car. So much more relaxing than fighting through the traffic.
JCW: It would appear that one of your previous ‘tries to post’ had a ‘c’ after the ‘j’ in your email address so the software might not have recognised you. Hope other tries are successful.
Court: Exciting now! I presume you’re still on schedule to take delivery before festivities begin?
Yes, still on ‘before Xmas’ apparently. I’ve got to go to our head office to get it though as the guy who’s having the Megane is based there.
Dammit, a rabbit walked across my keyboard – no, I’m really not joking.
Phoned my stealers earlier they were “just about to phone me”, seems my car has been stuck at Sheerness due to the weather. It will be arriving at the garage a week today.
Hope you hear about yours soon Court.
I got the same message today… 🙁
Can anyone help me with some answers…
1) I was originally informed when the car arrived at the garage I would be asked to select a reg number, I have been given a selection of 6 via email and the car is not due until Monday/Tuesday next week, don’t they need the VIN number etc?
2) I ordered the diamond protection stuff & was told this would take 24 hours to do, if it arrives on Tues & I collect it on Wednesday is this coating done in the factory?
3) Should the PDI check be carried out before the tax & registration plates are paid for?
4) Anyone know the proper sequence as I feel this may be rushed to complete before Christmas – or am I being really paranoid?
Help please!
1. They have the VIN number already.
2. No, it’s a dealer thing. Costs a fortune. Sales guys love to sell it as they make massive commission on it. Worth not a lot (buy it in for £20ish). Missus is a service manager therefore I know all about Supaguard/Diamondbrite etc.
3. Diamondbrite will be done during the PDI. Takes 5 minutes to apply, but the interior needs a little time to dry.
As you’ve agreed to purchase the car they’ll PDI it once it arrives (or when they have time). You can pay for it all when you pick it up.
Can anyone help with a query on the MFD. According to the owner’s manual a digital speed display should be available from the menu. This does not appear when you scroll through the menu and the secondary speed option does not appear in the menu either, it appears to be permanently on and is in km/h, any ideas?
If you have a look through this mammoth thread this was asked before.
I can’t conclusively confirm what happens on the Polo GTI, but on other UK market VAG cars of the same era you can only select KPH in the MFD.
In mainland Europe and Ireland you can select MPH or KPH in the MFD. An EU rule means that you have to have a permanent way of displaying KPH. In the USA you can only select MPH and in Canada you can select both.
Easily changed with Vagcom/VCDS though.
Iain – The secondary speed indicator is positioned down the MFD between two lines and is displayed as KPH only. I have never been able to change this to MPH. I’m happy with it though and it does make sense to have both MPH and KPH.
I’m going to phone my VW garage in the morning to see if I can get this changed – I can’t stand it!!
I don’t imagine it is irreversible?
Got my registration number, all I need is the car now… it’s STILL at the port.
You’re on the final stretch now, Court. Hopefully it will be before Christmas? That’s if ‘Santa’ thinks you’ve been a good boy of course. 😉
Also got my reg.
Pick it up Saturday… Has been a loooong wait, ordered it when Somerset was still warm (14th July)!
Hope you hear soon Court.
I told them if I have to have it on Xmas Eve then they’d better arrange for a big red bow for the roof!
Pics please JCW when you get it and before it’s filthy… Will just keep me going till mine arrives.
Not long now Court. I saw that red one I spotted in Glasgow again today and parked beside it and had a nosey. Looks awesome, everything about it I love. Think the interior looks great.
CAN’T WAIT…
That’s great news JCW. Yes, pics please – could do another ‘here are two more’-type post when Court’s arrives. Hope Christmas Eve is the day, Court. Fingers crossed!
Picked mine up on today with between 4 & 6 inches of snow on the ground – couldn’t delay though, one word “sweet”. Got a few photos but drag & drop doesn’t seem to work, how can I post them?
I use http://www.tinypic.com to host my pictures on the internet, then copy the link it gives you and stick it in the text box here…
Congrats! Was great to wake up with snow down this way this morning. 🙂
Whoop whoop! Thursday 23rd I’m off to Birmingham to pick up my GTI… I hope the weather isn’t too bad 🙂
Excellent news, Court! Fingers crossed that it all goes to plan.
Good luck and best wishes to all of you about to get your respective cars. Hope you enjoy as much I as have with mine. Great present.
Very bad weather here in Warwickshire but the car has handled well.
The LED fairy lights look very festive too. 🙂
Had mine for just under a week and it continues to impress in so many areas. Previous 3 years were in a Clio 197 and this was a descision to go in a different direction.
I wanted more comfort, refinement and a quality interior. All delivered (after a 6 month wait) in abundance. The Polo GTI just feels like a larger car with much better ride quality. I did have reservations about DSG but now I am hooked.
And the engine note sometimes reminds me of a car I had a good few years ago, a Golf VR6 which had one of my all time favourite engines. I haven’t been so eager to get up in the morning to drive to work for ages, this car really is that good.
I agree. Have often commented to friends that from the engine note you would never guess you were driving a 1.4.
Finally! She arrived at 10:30 at my Birmingham office.
Tiniest dent on the n/s rear arch though. The dealer was aware of it, but thought it best to get the car to me and have the dent guys come out later than have it delayed for a few more days with a dent guy going to them.
http://i54.tinypic.com/2w7lrhs.jpg Just a quick pic from a phone earlier. It’s filthy after 100 miles…
Damn it’s fast. I’ve only been without the Edition 30 for 6 months and it was like getting back behind the wheel of an old friend. People really MOVE out your way when you’re ‘pressing on’ 😉
I’ll get the RCD510 and DAB fitted on Boxing Day, I may even get it cleaned. Assuming I can find somewhere open.
Really pleased for you Court, looks great. Welcome to the club! 🙂
Looks great Court – the long-awaited Christmas present to yourself! Look forward to seeing more pics and really really pleased that it’s everything you thought it would be.
As for the ‘pressing on’, I wouldn’t do too much of that… Been to a ‘Speed Awareness’ course today (more details in a forthcoming post) to avoid a 3-point penalty and fine. And I was only doing 35mph in a 30…
Have a great Christmas all and thanks for supporting the site.
I installed the RCD-510 DAB tuner today. It’s brilliant to have 6 Music and 5 Live in the car now.
http://i53.tinypic.com/124eio0.jpg
While I was at it I installed a Nokia CK-100 Bluetooth car kit. I not a fan of the non-OEM look so the CK-100 was perfect as there is no screen just a small button that I’ve located between the gear knob and the cup holders.
http://i55.tinypic.com/11v625k.jpg
Here’s the microphone:
http://i53.tinypic.com/2lsfd46.jpg
It can also stream music from most Bluetooth phones if you so require.
Oh, and here’s another shot of the car. It’s awesome!
http://i55.tinypic.com/20ucv4k.jpg
All looks great, Court! And you managed to clean the car then. 😉
Would love to have a small feature/running report on your trials and tribulations with the radio and phone kit/installation if you’d be interested in joining the team and posting updates now and again.
Hope you had a good Christmas.
It would be a pleasure – I’d like to say it was easy, but I have a graze on every knuckle after fitting it all.
In other news I went out for a spirited drive this morning over some rough B-roads. The Polo was very skittish, like it was bouncing around, even on the straights. I was quite worried to say the least. I suspected incorrect tyre pressures so when I got back I checked them and not one of them was less than 4 psi over the recommended pressure; 44 and 45 psi on the front and 40 on the rears! No wonder it was skittish, that’s almost Kwik-Fit incompetence.
We are lucky enough to have just picked up a Polo GTI having come from a Fiesta ST.
Still getting used to the DSG, but I think I know where people are coming from when they say it is not as involving as other hot hatches. It is a bit more of a sophisticated hot hatch and does not portray a “boy racer” image.
It is certainly great to drive, and I guess you just get used to some of those unwanted downshifts which are not always necessary.
Cracking car though. 🙂
Just been informed my car is in the country and I should have it next week.
Court, hope you’re still enjoying the car. Yes, would be great to have something written down about the audio/Bluetooth uprgades – there are people who want them – so when you have time to put fingers to keyboard, that would be great.
Happy new year!
I thought I would give my impressions after 4 weeks of ownership with my Polo GTI. Coming down from a Mk V GTI Golf I was initially worried about the space, but soon discovered that the driving position and environment are excellent. I am still coming to terms with the difference in the weight, the Polo is much livelier on the road, but still retains very competent handling. The steering is on the light side and lacks some feel at low speed but does improve when driving more rapidly.
The engine is a delight, with so much torque that you have to be a little careful with the accelerator pedal when pulling away as wheelspin can be easily induced. The traction control doesn’t seem to compensate for this but it may be the condition of the roads after the snow. I am still amazed by the power delivery throughout the rev range. It did surprise me however, to get an oil warning light coming on last weekend after 1100 miles, but my garage says that is normal until the engine has bedded in.
Because of the road conditions, I have been cautious not to go too mad, but my overall fuel consumption is standing at 37.6mpg (half the mileage being around town, with plenty of hills). On one recent longer trip I managed to achieve over 48mpg. The gearbox is also brilliant, especially when driving around the town, and the paddles come into their own when you want a quick change down to overtake.
The only mistake I made was to have fitted the VW approved Kenwood Multimedia unit. This proved useless, as it constantly dropped my Bluetooth connection and the main screen shone too brightly, especially at night, which meant I had to switch it off to drive safely. My dealer put the original RCD310 (with DAB) back in and that is working exceptionally well. Yesterday I had a Parrot Mki9000 hands free system installed, which is working fantastically with my iPhone. I can highly recommend ConnectMyCar (a subsidiary of Carphone Warehouse) who fitted it expertly at my home within 4 days of ordering online.
So as you can see, I am extremely happy with my new acquisition, and will be looking forward to clocking up many more miles in it. To anyone thinking about cancelling their order, my advice would be to wait, it is well worth it.
Very nice write up DorsetDC on your first few weeks with your new Polo GTI. We have had ours nearly 2 weeks and initially I did get that feeling of lack of involvement with the DSG doing everything for you, but I am making good use of the paddles now and find it very enjoyable.
Interesting to see that your oil light came on after 1100 miles, I must confess I did wince a little when our salesman took the car up to 6000rpm when the engine was cold, I was not impressed with that!
It is far more economical than our Fiesta ST (2-litre) that we have just traded in, but you would expect that being a 1.4. I have already seen mid to high 40s average mpg, I expect this to improve as we are still less than 300 miles on the clock.
Performance is excellent, and as you say there is lots of juicy low down torque, so you have to watch yourself as the speed builds incredibly quickly.
We love the car though and feel very privileged to own it!
Hi guys,
Been keeping tabs on here for ages but this is the first time I’ve bothered to post anything. I’m loving all the great things being said about the GTI so far.
My one is down for build week 6 and I cannot wait. It’s been 4 months since I ordered it so I’m finally seeing some light at the end of the tunnel.
Collected my car yesterday – here are a few links. Well worth the 195 day wait. 😆

Excellent news! The dealer rang me today to say that I now had a confirmed build date of week commencing 31st January (week 5). This has been brought forward three weeks from their previous estimate.
With a bit of luck I should get the car by the middle of March.

Great Schumacher, I am now also expecting mine early in March since the dealer confirmed build date of second week in January. To tell you the truth I am a bit numb from all the waiting; I ordered mine in April 2010. I figured well, if I waited this long…
PM – it sounds as though you have had the longest wait of anyone or has anyone else had (or having) a longer wait? I did get to see my first GTI in the metal today. There is a white
pre-registered one with a panoramic sunroof at Gilbert Lawton in Manchester. It looks great, but I really think it needs the xenon headlamps for the full GTI effect though. I bet that there won’t be that many Polos with sunroofs around now that they have been removed from the UK options list.
Still loving the car nearly 4 months on!
The car seems to use quite a bit of oil. I mentioned this last year and I see Paul had the oil light come on too. Have been told the engine is still bedding down up to 5000 miles, fast approaching that, so we’ll see. The previous model GTI never consumed oil like this. Wouldn’t trade back though.
Hi John,
I think it was ‘DorsetDC’ that had the oil light on at 1100 miles. We have done just over 500 now, I have checked the oil once, seemed ok but now you have mentioned it, I will make more frequent checks! As you say – it does take time for the engines to bed in, so I think it will settle in due course.
Apart from that (touch wood) all seems good, there seems to be a slight noise (sounds like big rain droplets) coming from the bottom of the windscreen area, not sure what this is, only notice it when driving slowly, am not pushing it as the mileage is still very low.
Hi Paul, yes I meant DorsetDC, sorry.
The sound you describe in your car is curious, can’t say I’ve noticed the same. Will be listening out now.
Hi John, its not a major noise, if it was I would have been back down to VW in a flash! I think it may be something called a ‘scuttle panel’ which may be slightly loose, I guess sometimes with new cars this is the downside, once they take to the road you can un-earth a few minor issues, but for a car costing almost £20K I would not expect there to be many!
Apart from that, I love driving it, although yesterday we just seemed to constantly be stuck behind slow traffic all the time which put paid to any exuberant driving!
You seem to be loving yours – I have yet to see another one on the road!

Hi John and all, yes – I can confirm oil consumption. Checked this weekend and the dipstick level had dropped to around the halfway mark! Have got just over 700 on the clock, but I guess the first 1000 miles are always likely to be heavier on fuel/oil. As you say though, other new cars I have had have not consumed oil quite as fast as this. Am looking for it to settle soon.
Average fuel was 41mpg on first tankful and 39 on the second. Slightly heavier right foot. 🙂
Hi chaps
New tests here and one upcoming in Auto Express tomorrow.
Neil Birkitt, editor of Volkswagen Driver, currently has one of the Volkswagen UK press fleet test cars with him and he said he got 0-60 in 6.6 seconds, low to mid 40s and 52mpg! Though not at the same time, obviously…
Hi Paul,
Yes it seems ironic that the car is frugal on fuel but not on oil. Hopefully this will change. Re Auto Express and 52 mpg. What were they doing, pushing the car?! I’ve never had it in the 50s.
I think I can remember another reviewer getting around the 6.6s 0-60, Auto Express perhaps?
I can quite believe the 52mpg too, I got 50.4 coming from work one night, average of 45-50mph – I was really testing it.
I had a brief read of the Auto Express and evo reviews and both seemed rather negative of the Polo I thought.
I tend to treat with a pinch of salt the Auto Express ones anyway , but I am sure not so long ago they were praising it up, and now they are knocking it back down again!
I will have another read (probably buy a copy) and pass proper judgement then!
Great news, they (dealer) said the car is in transit and I should have it by middle of this month. Apparently what happened is this: people ordering the 3-door versions of the GTI were assembled in Pamplona, Spain. People ordering the same Polo GTI but with 5 doors were being assembled in South Africa. There was a big holdup with a strike in South Africa in the first instance of delay. Then when they got back to work or a while thereafter due to a backlog in orders, there became a problem with VW’s supplier of the Xenon headlights. They shipped the whole lot, or at least my car, back to Germany. The job was completed (hopefully) and shipped here post haste (hopefully).
I will keep you informed of its progress (hopefully). Well done to all who have their cars, hope they bring you all a lot of pleasure. If at all possible, can somebody tell me if other 5-door versions have had their owners take delivery yet?
Sorry, just to reply to Schumacher’s comment on the pano roof… On the few days where you can really take advantage of it, in this country with our skies constantly hanging cumulonimbus like Xmas decorations, would it really have been worth it to have the pano roof fitted anyway? Meh, in my eyes its just another gadget to get screwed up. Maybe it would start leaking onto my dashboard and possibly ruin the car and/or mess up the electronics. To be quite honest, I wouldn’t have that extra fitted even if they said I can have it for gratis. I might be completely wrong here but it is, nevertheless, my opinion.
On the plus side I did have the Xenons and the RCD510 fitted. I am happy with the analogue setup for the radio, since the car will most likely be due for other enhancements by the time analogue is phased out and they switch over completely to digital. Climatron is simply a gadget/gimmick… If you’re hot you turn on the air con, if cold the heater, not really rocket science, just 1 more button to push. Convenience pack is only the most practical if you smoke in the car. Little washers to wash your headlights? How often am I going to use them? 😛
Hi PM ,
The xenons but particularly the LED daytime running lights which you will have are what helps make the car stand out with people I have found. (Get very favourable comments and looks).
The little washers will be included on your car as you have the xenons and are required by EU regs. They will pop up for you automatically once every 4 or 5 times you use your windscreen wipers.
I had originally wanted the sunroof but forgot to order it at the time. It was probably a good job though, as I bet I wouldn’t have had the car last Sept/Oct and would most likely still be waiting for it now.
PM – presumably you wouldn’t buy a convertible either then? I believe that the market for convertibles is very big in the UK compared to the continent. This article from the SMMT is a few years old though.
http://www.smmt.co.uk/articles/article.cfm?articleid=8731
Just to add… For me the pano roof was about design, which I believe was positive, not what it could do.
Yeah, roof was more about design for me too. Looked cracking in the launch pictures.
Anyone know where/how I could get the 17″ Shadow wheels they spec in Germany? Keen to know rough cost. Still can’t decide if I’d rather them than the standard wheels :-/
Rory – Have seen a couple of ‘new’ 17-inch Monza wheels with black inserts on eBay and plenty of 18-inch versions from suppliers. They must be out there. I like them.
Hey, awesome news… I pick up my Polo GTI tomorrow, wooohooo!!! I can’t wait. I got a phone call last week but I was away on what would be my last outing (apart from the commute to work) in my ’58 reg Polo. I phoned back yesterday to arrange a time to pick it up. Very pleased, I am… Tonight sleep, I won’t (chuckle).
Schumacher – No I never been a lover of convertibles, cabriolets or soft tops either, you are quite right. Maybe it just depends if you like that sorta thing or not. I do enjoy them in the right circumstances but I wouldn’t pay my money for one. I have seen quite a few about, that I have noticed.
John and Rory – Once again, I suppose it’s what you like more than anything else. I agree that it does look fantastic from a design feature point of view. I will definitely give it more careful consideration next time I am in the market for a new car.
I like the black insert wheels too, btw. I’ve seen some other custom ones as well… same design but looks like they been cut a different way to give a sharper appearance… really really (really) like those ones too 🙂
PM – that’s great news. Mine should have been built last week, but I’ve not heard from the dealer as to whether this actually took place or not…
Ordered mine back in November and it should have gone into production this week I hope. Have been told it should be at the dealer around March 1st which is good cus i got a custom 11 plate lol. Really can’t wait, havent seen one on the road at all yet, went and looked at my dealer’s white demo one though… 🙂
Good luck for tomorrow PM!
@James – not long to wait now 🙂
Yay! Got my car today, I am really impressed. The wait finally paid off. I only noticed later that the one set of lights is not working. Not the Xenon or the fairy lights… The ones on the very inside, I think it’s the sidelights, I can’t get to work (maybe something I am doing wrong). Dealer said I should make a turn past there tomorrow so they can take a look. Other than that I am chuffed to bits. Getting it to do snail pace from stopped was a bit jerky (getting into parking).
@ Schumacher & James, just hang in there mates. Good luck, hope you don’t have to wait as long as I did LOL. Really a super car, was worth it. Thanks for the well wishes Paul.
Great news PM, enjoy.
Re your front sidelights. Your car has the LED daytime lights and these also act as sidelights. Daytime conditions and the LEDs are at their brightest then if you turn the lights on to side as if to suggest darker conditions they will dim but remain on. They also dim when your lights are switched on to Xenon. So nothing to worry about I’m sure it’s all working fine.
Next to my Xenons there is a light that looks like it should be a sidelight but is, in fact, the static cornering light. You may have the same?
Great stuff PM – very pleased for you 🙂
I don’t have Xenons but as John said, hopefully your lights are all ok!
Enjoy it mate, watch the oil level in the first few 100 miles as it does have a tendency to burn off a bit initially.
LOL, OK LEDs not fairy lights then. 😀 Thanks John, you saved me a trip to the dealer, good on you mate. Dear me, I feel a bit sheepish now hehehe.
Paul – Yeah I did notice previous posts about the oil situation… In your opinion does 50 mile oil checks seem like a good gap to keep?
And to all… Just ignore my comments about jerkyness getting into parking, that was just me being a n00b :/
Hi PM, every 50 miles I would say is a bit to cautious. 🙂
About once a tankful at first I would say (350 miles), I was checking it from cold (which is wrong). Manual
says to check from warm once the oil has drained back to the sump. Situation should start to improve once
a few thousand miles are on the clock!
Congrats on getting it PM.
Not so great for myself however. Dealer e-mailed me this afternoon advising VW had changed the order from Build Week 6 (this week) to 19!
Ordered August 2010 – Delivery May 2011 (maybe). I must be setting a record with this.
Any ideas on what suitable compensation I should ask for.
Thanks Paul, that’s very helpful. I can’t read the manual without falling asleep for some reason though. It might as well have been written in greek. Some things I understand, but when looking for specific things, I find it hard to pinpoint exactly what I want to know. I’ll get there eventually LOL.
Scott just hang in there man, it will come. I ordered mine in early May 2010. That makes it 9 months. I can see a pattern developing here, can you? Peeps that ordered 5-door model were always gonna wait longer. Just take heart in the fact that alot of us had to wait the same amount of time as you. That’s if you get it in May, much more after that you probably will be the one thats waited the longest. I’m gonna quote from another post that I saw “Anyone thinking of cancelling your order, are you mad? Go find something to keep your mind busy while you wait because u wont regret it.” Or something to that effect. Good advice that…
I’ve had some brilliant news – my car was built last week and I should get it in three to four weeks! That’s a shade under nine months from ordering to delivery…
I can’t believe the delivery wait time Scott is having to endure. That is beyond a joke!!
Scott – It depends what exact spec you wanted but you could always cancel your order get your deposit back and go and buy one of the demo Polo GTIs that are popping up at dealerships. Less made to measure I guess and more off the shelf.
It doesn’t seem confined just to Polo GTIs either, as I know of someone who has just cancelled a new Golf order after the delivery time kept being put back. The car was ordered last autumn and they had initially been told a ‘before Xmas’ delivery and now told a summer delivery. They’ve bought a new Merc B class instead.
PM – It was me who said that stuff last year about cancelling orders etc, high on the excitement of getting mine, but even I would be tested by Scott’s wait.
Great news Schumacher.
Has anyone ordered the car in Reflex Silver?
Hey people! Great news PM!!
I got a call today from VW and they told me that my car has been built and is in transit. According to their fleet they reckon they will be seeing the car around early-mid march. I think I’m just a lucky one lol… If mine does come in March it will have taken about 4 months from date of ordering… Is there a pattern here? Where does everyone live? I’m in south England near Reading… Mine’s pretty speced up as well, not just a bog standard… Interesting to know…
Hi James, I am based in Glasgow. Ordered mine in August, 3-door Shadow Blue metallic. Due to arrive at the start of April, although might be earlier than that. It is a company car so just putting up with it. Bit annoying when you see them for sale on VW’s website though.
Think it is just a case of hanging in there.
John – There was a silver one for sale on carsales.com.au. Really like it in silver actually. Are you still enjoying the car?
Great news Schumacher, when they say its in transit you have a pretty certain date. Good luck!
John, nine months is pretty much becoming the norm, with James being the exception if he does get his in four. Also depends if you get the 3 or 5 door. The 5 door is built in South Africa which would obviously take longer in transit. Mine took 9 months too. Hehehe, VW might not be very good at sticking to deadlines, they still make brilliant cars though. IMO demo = second hand… hang on, no make that 2,500 hand. Has to be new. Maybe I’m just fussy like that 🙂 IRO your comments last year, I actually felt a little better about waiting after reading it LOL. And lastly, I ordered my car in Reflex Silver, really awesome.
Will be interesting to see if you do get your car in four months James. Good luck for that. It’s an amazing car.
Insurance is a bit stiff on it though, anyone got any ideas who I should get a quote from when I next need to renew?
PM – VW with all its acquisitions of other brands is getting too big and losing the plot. I also think that higher order numbers than anticipated has caused them problems.
Ooh very nice, Reflex Silver, had the 2001 GTI in that… loved it. Buffs up really well. ‘Showroom Shine’ is a brilliant car cleaner… waterless car cleaning! Other products are available. 🙂
When you get the chance post some pics on here.
Hi Alan, yes still enjoying it. Good luck with yours!
Think we should have a Polo GTI rally this year.
John, you make a good point re VW losing the plot. Years gone by they used to pride themselves on customer service. Now a customer to VW is like a customer to Tesco, although admittedly nine month old bread probably not a good idea. I had my car done with supaguard which is guaranteed for 3 years. Job done. Unfortunately I am not sure *how* to put pictures up, would love to though. I’m a bit challenged when it comes to IT stuff.
All said and done, I still can’t believe Jeremy Clarkson said that it’s a girls car. He either has really bad taste or he gets paid too much. Thinking about it, probably both. And then some.
I was at my local VW agent last November, and one of the workshop guys said that some customers are switching to other makes because of the long lead times. Waiting best part of a year is not acceptable, there could be something else that crops up in the meantime that you prefer.
@PM/John – out of interest, would you mind checking the “Print Status” on your owners manual please (back cover). Mine says 17.05.2010. Although I know most of the functions, nothing in there about the paddles. VW agent says that is the latest manual. Many thanks indeed.
Paul – Mine’s the same @ Print Status. Something else was never going to be an option for me. Wanted the GTI version as soon as I saw the new design Polos at the beginning of 2010. I don’t regret it for a second. My best decision about the car was to have the Xenons fitted and the metallic paint at extra cost. If I had more money, I would have gone for the DynAudio speakers too. Blasted insurance also won’t let me get tinted windows without penalising me for it.
Hi Paul, mine says 17.05.2010 also. To be honest I rarely use the paddles, or the cruise control I ordered. 🙂
Oh well it’ll sound good when I come to sell it and reel off the extras.
I’m pretty sure that my car is on the African Highway which left Santander today en-route to Emden. It can be tracked on this website:
http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/shipdetails.aspx?mmsi=353633000
Hi PM/John – many thanks indeed for your very quick replies, yes – I was surprised it did not have anything about the paddles although I obviously know how they work anyway.
I was not aware that DynAudio speakers were an option though.
John – yes the extras will make your car more desirable when you come to sell it.
Many thanks indeed guys.
Hi all, great news that you’re almost all finally with cars, and that you keep coming back to comment!
I’m still up for doing a ‘featurette’ on all of you if we can get you in the same place sometime later in the year. 😉
Hi guys, I hope you are all well and enjoying your cars. Those still waiting, good luck for a speedy delivery.
Just wanna ask all that have had their cars for a little while: I keep getting a text on my MFD *See safe locking Owners Manual*… I don’t seem to be able work out what it’s trying to tell me. Do you lock the car with one button push or two? The only reference to it is Safe Lock relating to the deadlock mechanism. Is this just an old message that needs to be cleared or am I locking the car the wrong way everytime? If it’s just an old message, can someone please tell me how to clear it?
Hi PM,
Can’t say that I’ve seen that message on my display.
One remote key button press operates the deadlock mechanism and two presses locks the doors without. So you need to only press once! You may be able to clear message by going into MFD settings and press reset if message persists. Sounds like you’ve been pressing the remote too much.
Thanks John. Basically I am a n00b then LOL. I’m off to try look how to get into the settings now. Love the car but I hate the manual. Other friend says that it’s a guy thing :/
Hi PM, yes as with John I have not seen that message at all. I have to press the fob twice though to unlock the passenger door as well, single press just unlocks the driver door, I guess that is the same for you guys?
I think I found my own solution for once. You people are all right… 1 lock press to lock, 1 unlock press to unlock drivers door and 2 unlock presses to unlock the whole car. What I think I need to do is press OK on the wiper arm next time I see the message. Thanks for your help guys 😉
I feel deprived PM. 🙂 I’ve been fiddling around with the locks but can’t get it to say anything on the MFD.
Just for the record, (I am sure you guys know this anyway), VW can re-program the ‘un-lock’ sequence as I found it annoying first of all to have to press the fob twice to unlock the whole car – I guess I am used to it now. My dealer said they would re-program it for me if necessary, so single press would unlock the whole car. I will probably leave it as it is though now.
(Laughing) John, it’s really got me baffled. I tried pressing the ‘OK’ button when I see it but the message still comes up everytime when turning off the ignition. I had to go load some CDs into the 6 CD changer on the RCD510 that I ordered extra on the vehicle, so I tried it then. I will eventually figure it out. Last resort would be going to the dealer, but because hardly anybody has had experience with the car and each dealer only in receipt of a few orders so far, it could be possible that I only find out what to do by the end of the year.
Good call Paul, because now that you are used to it you could end up missing that feature if you took the car to have it reprogrammed. To me that seems like a security feature so that nobody but you can gain access in certain untoward circumstances. Not sure how often you would need it, nevertheless there it is. Would be very useful in a place like Johannesburg, S. Africa, where I grew up. Big crime rate in that place. Only other positive I can see from that feature is less wear and tear on the other door locks and a slight energy saving.
Hi people,
Yeah I think I am just lucky with mine only taking 4 months hopefully!! LOL. In terms of insurance PM I have found it brilliant… I’m only 19 and I was looking at a Fiesta ST which was guna cost me 3k to insure but the GTI is only gonna cost me 1.1k with Elephant…. Also PM what do you think of the Supaguard? I’m thinking about it but not sure.
I’m pretty gutted that I didn’t add the steering wheel stereo controls on and it’s too late now as its built… doubtful it can be put on now when it arrives in the UK!
Has anyone had extra tinting put on there windows? Im thinking im going to dark smoke the rear windows and wrap the roof in black.
James – the supaguard is brilliant, had it on the previous car too. They include aftercare products like tyre and alloy cleaner, shampoo, sponges and chamois. This time they even threw in a breakdown kit. It’s guaranteed for 3 years. You can also still access everything you can access from the steering wheel anyway, it’s just an extra cost that I myself can’t justify. Same reason I never took climatronic or cruise control or the panoramic roof. I got the RCD510 with 6 cd changer and xenon headlights, really not disappointed with them. As for darkened windows (tinting) I decided against it when my insurer said the price would be hiked up if I did it. Will probably do it when the car is a few years old.
Rich, not entirely sure if I am allowed to do this so please remove my post if it breaches site rules.
I replaced all 4 tyres on my car about 2 weeks ago, I have 2 tyres left if anybody is interested? These were on the rear, 7mm left.
PM – I shall go for the supaguard now that you have said that. I have got the RCD 510, Xenons, Winter Pack, Comfort Pack, Luxury Pack and Climate control. Was told the sunroof wasn’t going into production until March so couldnt be bothered waiting lol – even though it does look good hence why I want to wrap my roof in black. Is the RCD 510 good?? I would have gone for the sat nav option but it looked so so soooo basic lol… My sat nav on my iPhone looks better lol…
James – don’t worry about the sunroof, it seems to have disappeared from both the website and the factory-fitted options list… Glad you’re excited about getting the car. And so young, too! I’m 37 and still driving around in a 17 year-old Polo GT!
Rory – no worries about the ‘ad’. 😉
Rich – I’m not that fussed about the sun roof anymore, the only reason I liked it was because of the way it made the roof look lol! Im going to wrap the roof and spoiler on mine in black or matt black lol… Yeah, I am young lol but this is the fastest car I can insure atm for about 1k lol, also though it is the nicest 🙂 Been driving round in a ’10-plate Polo for the last few months, like the feeling of it but its only a 1.2 3-cylinder lol.
Yes James is young, a city trader perhaps? I’ve got socks older than that. 🙂
Supaguard by the way is a marketing ploy…you can do similar oneself for a tenner.
James, I really do like the RCD510, takes 6 CDs, comes with 6 speakers, touch screen and most things access from 1 button. The menus are simple so you get done with it really quick. I rarely use a sat nav. I have a seperate one that I used with the last car and it’s really not an inconvenience to me since I probably needed it about 8 times in the last 2 years.
Your iPhone sat nav is probably more informative too.
I have to disagree with John about the supaguard though. It is really difficult to apply and easy to mess up. Yes, you can get the same or similar for £10 (on eBay apparently). What you can’t get is the expertise, plus application is very labour intensive. If you scratch the paint while you apply it, all of a sudden it becomes alot more than just a tenner. If you know what you are doing, fair play, go for it. For me, the peace-of-mind was worth the price.
James, don’t take my word for it, look about three quarters of the way down this page re supagard…
http://www.clean-image.co.uk/articles/paint-sealant-faq.html#280
Yeah PM, to be honest I don’t have the time or patience to put it on myself, I am far to particular when it comes to things like that lol… I’d be there all day trying to get it perfect. I will leave it to VW.
Also PM, I did a quote this morning regarding the tinting to see how much my insurance would go up by! Without the tints it’s £1115 and with the tints it’s £1172 so not to bad tbh. Might see if VW will do me a good deal to dark smoke them before I get the car lol.
PM and James – it would appear that that company profiled here is based Chelmsford, like me. Anyone used them? Presume they’re not the only appliers of Supaguard…
Rich, I was only making reference to the FAQ page for everybody’s benefit. I am not in support of the company advertised on the website I made reference to. I have no previous or existing relationship with them, as a customer or otherwise.
People from Supaguard itself or trained people from Supagard would have done the job on my car, at the dealer, on day of receipt or soon thereafter. Myself, I trust VW with things sold to me, that authorised, trained personel carried out the work and guaranteed by Supagard. If you are thinking of getting this treatment on your car, I would honestly recommend you do the same and contact your VW dealer that you bought your car from. Let them organise it for you so that you will know 100% that what you are getting is the genuine article.
No worries PM, just curious that was all, as it was a local company. I need more than Supaguard on my old Polo – a respray might be a good step in the right direction first!
LOL Rich, yeah of course m8. My first car was a baby blue 1978 Golf 1. I have always been a VW fan, never owning anything else. I was going to get a Nissan when I was ready to buy a car the first time in UK but they got very funny about wanting a deposit on the car, so I told them I would get back to them.
10 minutes later I walked into a VW dealership, Pointed to the latest Polo (at the time) that they had on the showroom floor and said “That’s the car I want”. It was the one with the round lights at the back, ’58 reg, so the shape before this new shape. They were able to work around my deposit problem, leaving me to think why I ever went anywhere else TBH. Since then I haven’t looked back and probably never will. I hope somebody from Nissan gets to read this, you lost a good customer all because you weren’t able to be flexible. I will probably never buy a Nissan in the rest of my time on earth. Shift expectation? I hardly think so… more like downshift customer service. Well done VW, you took a bit long with this last order I placed but with all said and done, you proved you are a cut above the rest. Respect.
PM I totally agree! 🙂 Anyone else got more pics of their GTI to post? 🙂 Has anyone had any decent races yet lol? I’m looking forward to the fact it looks so subtle so I’ll have all the idiots on the roads thinking it’s a regular Polo… they’ll get a shock when I’m saying BYE BYE!
James, you got your car now?
Raced my friend’s Corsa VXRacing – they are terrible when a corner is involved.
Apart from that, no. Although, I did get 1.4 leptons on my travels today. Think it would have went a little further too…
Sorry for my ignorance but wtf is a lepton?
Leptons are a measure of speed used on car forums. A few people who have stated an actual speed they were travelling have got in trouble for it.
Use your imagination to work out the units… would it help if I put 1.44 leptons? LOL
PM
I have had the same security message since i got the car in December – always assumed it was just a reminder for the over 50s…
I’m glad I’m not the only one PM – that was my next question. These young ‘uns!
I didn’t know what a lepton was either 🙂
LMAO! *Breathes a sigh of relief* thanks guys, I was like at total risk of looking like a n00b 😀 … JCW, security message meaning the one I was getting referring me to the owners manual about Safe Locking? TBH, I haven’t been paying attention to whether or not the message is still coming up. Will look next time I am out, roughly 3:30am tomorrow. If you people want to get together for a day out in the summer, I might be up for that idea. Definitely not now though, and only if we can get a decent group together. Hopefully at least 10 of us. There are still a couple of people on this forum that have not yet taken delivery of their orders, so lets see what happens.
Dayum, I love my car 😀
PM – No not yet, only a few weeks now! Was just dreaming haha…
Excellent news!
My dealer has informed me that they now have my GTI in their possession! I’m going to have a look at on Thursday and will be collecting it on Friday 4th March. Can’t wait.
What? Two days and no comments? o0
Ok scratch that lol. Schumacher that’s good news mate, enjoy. 😉
Yes – Schumacher, that is next week – repeat only next week. Not long to wait now mate! 🙂
Paul – I know – I hope I’m not dreaming. I ordered the car eight months ago!
What colour did you order it in Schumacher?
Are you supposed to run this car in or is it good to go as soon as you get it?
PM – It’s white. It seems to be the most popular colour for the GTI if the ones on VW’s used car website is anything to go by.
Although newer cars are very different in regards to ‘bedding in’ than older cars, I would leave it 1000 miles before any harsh acceleration.
The car will of course loosen up over the next 6000 miles or so…
Hey Guys! Great news! Got a call from my dealer today and my car will be in on Tuesday and I can go collect it on the 4th – like Schumacher! Cant wait now!
James – that is excellent!
I went for a sneak preview of mine yesterday and it looks fantastic.
The interior looks far better in real life than in the photos and the sales assistant was raving about the bi-xenon/LED headlamps. Despite waiting eight months for it, it is still the only Polo GTI they have sold at that dealership.
Roll on Friday…
Great stuff chaps, I bet you can’t wait – fantastic, I am thrilled for you!
Fantastic news James and Schumacher… Yes, the Bi-Xenon/LED light setup really adds a quality finishing touch to the car, apart from the obvious advantage they have over standard lighting. I get compliments all the time about the car and people do give long looks at the car. The one time this guy on his bike spent so long looking in his mirrors at the car, he didn’t see the traffic light go green!
Then another time, a guy in a 2.0L Astra accelerated as I was trying to pass him, but he was unable to deny me my rightful place in front.
One other time, I actually saw in my rear view mirror, two guys in another car having a discussion about my car. Is it a Polo? Is it a Golf? *Guy smacks forehead* Ooooh, It’s the GTI… something like that. I just had a good snicker to myself about it LOL 😀
Big LOL PM! I can’t wait for it aha! I’m looking forward to all the total prats on the roads trying to not let me by!
I managed to get Friday off work LOL!! How sad, might be able to go and see my GTI tomoz!
Not as sad as taking a week off… I didn’t do that. 😛
HEHE! Can’t wait now.
Schumacher – I tried to go for a sneak peak last night at the place where VW take all their deliveries… Couldn’t see mine but there was clearly a new VW delivery there all wrapped up!! Hehe, I’m sad!
Out of the shadow blue metallic, getting my car next week…. Finally!
I have just seen a nice black Polo GTI, incredibly the first I have seen other than ours! 5 door, private plate. 🙂
Ohhh! I haven’t seen one round here apart from the dealers one and I’m worried that the delivery mine came on will have loads haha! Hopefully not….
I really think this car would look good in any colour, I like the black too. Nice one, Alan, congrats! Well worth it. 🙂
I’m so sad… the last two nights I’ve been going to the place where the dealer takes in all their new VWs and Audis. Went there tonight and nothing… Went up to the dealer and it’s THERE in the showroom window 🙂 Not long now!!!!
Good luck James! Exciting eh? 🙂
Cheers Paul! Gettin’ her at 1pm.
Just got back home with the new motor – brilliant!!
James/Schumacher – we do expect a full account by close of play today 😉
Yes, chaps, we do! We’re getting ever closer to that photoshoot… 🙂
Well apart from someone almost taking my front end off on a roundabout by overtaking me in the right hand lane in order to turn left at the first exit, I’m very impressed. The car is incredibly well built compared to my previous GTI, particularly the interior which seems to cocoon you and is very comfortable.
I’ve never driven an automatic before, so it is taking a bit of getting used to and my left leg keeps looking for the clutch pedal, but I will get used to it in the end, although it does at times feel as though a computer is driving rather than me. I’ve had a go with the flappy paddles and sequential gearstick too.
The sunroof is a mechanical work of art – it’s been a nice sunny day here so I’ve had it open all the time. Hope it doesn’t go wrong. I also discovered that because I have ordered the rear parking sensors, a little graphic appears on the radio display showing you how close you are to any objects. I don’t remember anything being mentioned about this feature in the catalogue or on the internet.
My only negative so far is that it doesn’t seem to sound as rorty as my old 1.8T Polo GTI and there seems to be no turbo whistle.
I’m going to go out again later when it is dark so that I can properly check out the bi-xenon headlamps.
Congratulations to all those getting their cars!
I know what you mean Schumacher. I too had the 1.8T Polo and the turbo had a pronounced whistle and very nice exhaust note. But don’t despair just yet as this GTI has a nicer engine note on start up and a great supercharger whine on take off. All is not lost. 🙂
What can I say!! I absolutely love her!! The GTI sounds sooo nice and drives so nicely as well. Also the little features as Schumacher stated like the picture on the media player when reversing just add that little bit extra 🙂 Like Schumacher I am off out now to check out the Bi-Xenons! Going to take a random cruise up to Coventry… just for fun lol!! I’ll let you know how I get on and then I’ll post some pics tomorrow once I’m back from another road trip to Essex lol!!
Nice one chaps, I do know exactly what you mean though (Schumacher) when you say that it feels like a computer is driving you at first.
We came from a Fiesta ST and initially I was longing for a clutch pedal and gear lever again. But – you do get used to it (as you say), and of course you can slide the gear lever over and go ‘F1’ style which is great fun.
Watch that oil level though initially, we have just ticked over 1,000 miles now and every 200 miles or so I can see the level has dropped just a little bit more.
Out of interest, which fuel is everyone using. The VW World road test seemed to insist using 98RON super unleaded for best performance/mpg.
My first 2 tankfuls were normal 95 but I did pay £1.35/litre for some super unleaded (Esso) the other night.
Happy driving folks! 🙂
I’ve just come back from a swift drive now that the roads are quieter and I’m seriously impressed.
John – the engine does make some nice sounds after all.
Paul – I use Shell V-Power, I used it in the old GTI too.
James – the thing that particularly surprised me is that despite having only the basic radio (I’m intending to replace it with a Pioneer sat-nav) it does show the parking sensor images. I’d have expected that to only be available on the touch screen radio or the sat-nav.
It’s great to hear that everyone is pleased with their purchases…
Schumacher and James, congrats on getting your wheels.
On the fuel side, I have yet to fill up so I am not sure what was put in it (I got my car with a full tank). I plan to fill up with Shell V-Power, like Schumacher. Car says I got another 50 miles ’till I need to fill up, so possibly by the middle of next week I will have an indication on that front. I have been enormously busy at work, so haven’t had any recreational runs out anywhere yet. The daily commute was never this much fun though. 😀
I also had a good brake test today, as I was cut off by some dozy cow who probably thought the mirrors attached to her car were there for vanity purposes rather than road safety. My car stopped pretty well though, I was suitably impressed.
Schumacher, I have to agree with you, the interior is really top drawer. Compared to my previous Polo (2008), the difference is as vast as the transition between night and day. Something else that really impressed me was the subtle way the doors close, a real quality feel. Really happy with the Bi-Xenon/LED light setup too. I did not opt for the sensor pack so I can offer no comment there.
Although I do see the advantages of this new fangled DSG idea, I must admit that, I too, miss my gear lever and clutch. 🙁
Rich, I hope you are planning this shoot for during the summer sometime mate, the winter sure looks like it is out for full value this year! 😉
Hey! I’m planning on putting V-Power in mine as well… Which will happen today as I have used 3/4 a tank since yesterday afternoon lol.
Schumacher – Yeah it is so good that the reversing picture is available on all of the radio options – I have the touch screen but I have seen it on the RCD310 as well.
So far I have got 270 out of the tank with 1/4 left and 90 miles showing on my trip computer. Last night I was actually addicted to cruise control on the motorways lol!
Here you go guys…
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb222/Cheeri1/IMG_2229a.jpg
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb222/Cheeri1/IMG_2231a.jpg
I had my first fill up yesterday. Something weird though… The owner’s manual says the car has a 45-litre tank, and I still had a 20 mile range on my MFD screen, but still managed to fit in 50.91 litres. O.o Can anyone tell me of any similar experience or did I get conned at the filling station?
That does sound a bit strange PM, I have filled up 3 times now and managed to squeeze in about 38 litres. The MFD was reading, I think, 45 miles to go, warning had just come on.
I stop filling the tank at around the first click and just round up to the next £.
Oil light came on again today. Hadn’t checked it for a while as have nearly done 6000 miles, give or take a couple of hundred, and hoped it had settled down… obviously not.
Is there an issue with my car or with the TSI engine in general I wonder?
As I’ve previously mentioned, the last model GTI never had this issue even from new!
Interesting John, we have done about 1100 miles now and I have put in about 1/2 litre.
I have now bought a new 1L Castrol Edge top-up. As you say though, previous cars I have had never needed topping up, bar a Mazda RX-8 I used to have at one time. I am very surprised though if it is still drinking oil at 6000 miles.
I phoned the customer services number for Shell and logged my complaint, in relation to the obvious error in the amount of fuel they supplied me. They gave me a reference number, took my phone number and said the retailer will contact me after they have completed an investigation. I made my intention clear of not supporting Shell, any of its branding or any subsidiary company, should they not rectify this matter and re-imburse me for the lost revenue.
At 280 miles my engine oil still looks fine, don’t think it has used anything.
Collect my new car tomorrow morning. I wonder if there are any other shadow blue metallic GTIs out there? Will try and get some pics up.
@PM – glad that you have complained. Of course this may well have affected a lot of other customers at the same garage.
There is no way you would get 50 or so litres in the tank, even allowing for fuel to go up to the filler, I would say 46 litres at a push.
@Alan – good luck with your pick up, have not seen any shadow blues around but great choice! 🙂
PM- I will be more observant in future, I just tend to fill it up and pay the bill. I remember years ago the weights and measures guys would visit filling stations and make sure the equipment was giving accurate readings.
Excellent news Alan, you’ve waited long enough! Shadow Blue Golf GTI always looks smart, so will the Polo.
Once again I noticed a conversation in another car through my rear view mirror. Now I am not terribly good at lip reading, but I could clearly see the woman in the back seat, probably tending to a child say: “What’s that, Harold?” to which was replied: “Well, that’s the new Golf GTI, Julia.”… Boy, someone’s going to be really confused when they see the Golf GTI… 😀
PM – on two occasions (at different petrol stations) I have managed to get more than 50 litres in the car!
Picked up the car earlier. It is brilliant, love the colour. If someone can point me in the right direction of posting pics, I will do that later.
Alan – get a Photobucket account and upload them to there and then it will give you a link (like mine a few posts above) to copy and paste onto here. 😀
Hope everyone is enjoying their cars.
Occasionally, mine makes a short squealing noise when I accelerate hard. I think it might be from the supercharger. Does anyone know if this is something to worry about?
James, I don’t see how you could fit more than 50 litres into a 45 litre tank, as clearly stated in the owners manual. I am currently getting 300 miles to a tank, but most of my journeys are within a 5 mile range (no motorway driving). Assuming VAG’s estimate of 48mpg (12,68 mpl) is a little optimistic, 300 miles to 40 litres (allowing for a 5 litre reserve tank) seems about right for town driving.
Anyways, the chap that runs the place has said that nobody else has complained, that it’s a very busy station and that’s his basis for refuting my claim, together with the fact it doesn’t show on his system. Has anyone else, apart from James, also filled up over 50 litres? This is irritating the living bajoobies outta me. :/
James, that noise sounds as if it’s OK. I think grinding noises would be more of a concern, LOL. The car would be guaranteed for at least 2 years anyhow. When you get to first service and they put the diagnostic machine on it, any problems would then come to light. Probably not a good idea to crank it up too much for the first thousand miles at least, to give it a chance to run in. There are many conflicting opinions regarding wether the car comes pre-run-in/needs to-be-run-in, but even my dealer said it would be an advantage to do this procedure.
Congrats Alan, happy driving. 😉
Sorry, my last comment relating to James in the 3rd paragraph was actually for a reply to Schumachers last post. :”>
Yes – congrats Alan, look forward to seeing some pics as we contemplated the shadow blue colour!
As for the refuelling, yes I have only managed to get 38 litres in the tank, then again I tend to want to fill up more or less as soon as the light comes on. The MFD normally shows about 40-45 miles left.
When filling I normally stop at the first click, and just trickle the last little bit to round up to the next £. I guess though there is still some more capacity to go, but I am not keen really on brimming it right out.
As for noises James, yes agreed with PM on that one, think that is OK. These twin charger engines can make peculiar sounds under harsh acceleration.
I am keeping acceleration to a minimum to protect the engine while running in (and my wallet), that did not stop our salesman flooring it from cold when it was new though!
They do say engines are ‘bench’ run in, but there is still no substitute for real world running, stop/start. I am beginning to think that it may be 5000 miles or more until things are running with the smooth efficiency.
Sorry for confusing the issue Paul, it was Schumacher’s post relating to the noise. *Blush*
Haha, no worries PM, yes – Schumachers message went onto a new page (on my browser at least) so maybe that is why! 🙂
Hopefully the attached link will work to a couple of pics of the car. Not the best pictures as it is from my Blackberry.

Alan – Lovely looking car. Enjoy!
Yeah Alan, the car looks good in that colour, makes the red in the radiator grille really stand out. Happy driving mate. 😉
I been soooo busy, I really want to put a link to pics for you all to have a look. Don’t really wanna be the odd one out not putting up pics, I’m just inundated with work at the moment. Soon as I get a chance I will do it, promise.
Am I the only one that ordered a 5-door?
Yes – great looking car Alan, as I mentioned before, we did consider a Shadow Blue initially but then plumped for the Candy White.
As PM says, it really does make the red on the grille stand out.
@PM – We have a 3 door, not sure about the other guys tho!
Love the colour and the front grille is one of my favourite parts. Cheers for the comments guys. Will hopefully get out for a good drive this weekend and will post some more pics. 😉
Alan
PLEASE post more photos as I ordered a red GTI a week ago and I’m seriously considering changing to Shadow Blue… hope you enjoy yours it looks great.
Will do Stew, give me a couple of days! The colour looks brilliant…!
Hey guys! I honestly have managed 53 litres for the last few fills! I’m getting about 380 a tank 🙂 Also can someone check if they got a jack etc in the boot under the floor as I only have a spare wheel and bit for the wheel nuts! Cheers guys!
James – my jack is under the spare wheel.
Just seen a white GTI in Leamington Spa.
Saw my first GTI on the road last Saturday morning (12 March). It was a Candy White one on the A14 just east of Cambridge at about 8.20am.
Looked really nice.
On the fuel tank question I have a 1.8T Polo and when the fuel gauge has said it’s empty with 0 miles showing on range setting on computer, I can still drive another 40-45miles safety and at fill up that takes around 45litres. I dodn’t think I’ve ever got 50 litres into the tank though.
A
Saw another GTI last night 🙁 It was white without the bi-xenons heading towards Basingstoke!
Hi all. Have been reading all your comments since I ordered my GTI last September. Shadow Blue 5 Door, Bi-Xenons, RCD510 and sunroof. It was scheduled to be here (Perth) mid-May but just heard will be ready for me next week. Can’t wait after hearing what you all have to say.
Hi AllyE,
That is great news. I have the shadow blue and it looks great. A guy in a R32 slowed right down today, took a look and gave me the thumbs up. I am amazed how much attention it draws.
Good luck when it comes.
AllyE – that’s great news. I only know of three GTIs with sunroofs and now the option has been deleted from the UK spec they will be extremely rare.
I’ve done just over 500 miles in mine now and I’m pleased to say that the engine is definetely starting to feel a bit looser.
Yeah James, the car just looks better with the Bi-Xenons, I agree.
AllyE, glad to see someone else also opting for the 5-door. As far as I know the 5-door GTIs are still built in South Africa, I know they did have a problem with the supplier or just the supply of the Bi-Xenons. That was still a good turn around time considering I waited 9 months for mine. 😀 I love my car, it was worth the wait. And then some.
Enjoy your car AllyE! 😉
Schumacher, just don’t forget to check your oil after you fill up. It’s a good idea to do it when you get home, just let the oil settle for 20 minutes. Don’t check it while it is cold. Mine is also going well, I have not hit 500 yet but not far off.
We are on 1300 miles now and the oil consumption still seems as high as it was from new, I am a little surprised. I have been lucky enough to have owned a few cars from new now and nothing has used as much oil as the Polo. I guess I have put in about 3/4 of a litre.
It does seem to be common though amongst all Polo GTI owners, but I would hope it will settle soon. At £13.50/litre for Castrol Edge gets expensive.
Paul- I’ve now done over 6000 miles in the above red motor and it still seems fairly thirsty for oil. It has used so much at times that I have found myself looking for oil leaks on the garage floor… all fine there though.
As I said before it’s ironic you save on fuel only to spend on oil. Is it another reason VW may shelve the engine? Cracking little motor agreed but high maintenance a possibility.
Thanks for the update John, interesting – makes you wonder. I will be very disappointed if I keep having to check the oil, I will start getting paranoid about it!
At one time I did own a Mazda RX-8, and with that, you do have to check the oil level regularly being a rotary engine, but did not expect it with the Polo.
My VW dealer insist that it is normal for a new engine, I would perhaps expect it to begin to settle, but maybe it needs up to 10,000 under its belt. For us, that will take 2 years as we have another car as well. 🙂
Paul, I would take 2 years to complete 10k miles too. I checked my car’s oil after first fill up and it still looks okay. I should probably expect to need topping up oil on next fill up in about 180 miles.
Some idiot put a scratch into my bumper while it was parked, very possibly somebody pushing a buggy or a bicycle past it, I was seriously not impressed. :/
I have done over 2000 miles now (yes, I’m a petrol head lol being as I only work 3 miles down the road) and my oil seems fine… I have checked it numerous times after seeing the posts on here. Heres another pic i took and edited yesterday… really like this one.
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb222/Cheeri1/DSC_00471.jpg
James, is that silver? Car looks good, man. If it is silver, then my car looks the same, except with 5 doors. I was very weary of getting heated seats though, saw one episode of Top Gear and they stripped a car and found out how heavy they were. The car is much more nippier when it isn’t loaded with a heavy extra like that.
@James – great picture – there, looking good! Glad that your oil level seems to be ok. I need to take ours on a longer run, as it is doing town driving in the main which is not good for it. Now that we have ‘cheap’ petrol again, probably a good excuse. 😉
@PM – Sorry to hear about the scratch, especially on a car so new, people are just so careless. I did notice a tiny scratch on ours on the nearside wing, looks like somebody’s handbag or rucksack has scraped past it, luckily it is light and will polish out.
PM – No it’s white, i have just edited it a bit on iPhoto lol!
Paul – Yeah I have done numerous long runs to Bournemouth, Nottingham and Essex lol!
Paul, this scratch is all the way down to the bleedin’ primer. 🙁 It’s not going to be cheap to fix. Some people really don’t think *sigh*.
Sorry guys to hear of your minor damage issues, people are selfishly careless I’m afraid.
I do have a few stone chip marks on my car so I recently ordered the touch up paint from VW. Then with the aid of a cocktail stick I was able to paint inside the chip. Stand back from the car and you would be hard pressed to see the original damage.
John – Glad to see you are still giving us the benefit of experience.
Having chalked up 2300 miles in mine and driving in mostly ‘grandad’ mode (to and from work) these are a few things I have noticed.
1. The car seems a lot smoother now both in handling and engine (I have used 3/4 ltr of oil).
2. My car is definetly schizophrenic! Almost as though, in ‘Drive’ mode it has detuned itself – as a result i am getting 48-52 miles per gallon. On the other hand in ‘Sport’, it seems the car grows hairy arms and wants to rip every other car off the road – and I still get 41-43 mpg.
3. People don’t tend to overtake and force their way in front of me anymore (used to have a 1.6 Ka).
4. Nothing has beaten me away from traffic lights yet. 😉
Except for the last I dont believe my driving has changed and sometimes even going slower than I used to travel (same route last 6 years). Any comments?
Thanks for the update JCW, yes I put a little more oil in ours today, I must confess I am just putting small amounts in each time, I get so nervous of overfilling that I think I am under doing it. I reckon I have put in 3/4 litre in 1,300 miles though.
I have been driving it in ‘grandad’ mode most of the time while it is new, but yes, the car does take on a different character when you want it to.
Sometimes the DSG can annoy me a little, example going down a hill, I may lift right off the throttle if I see traffic ahead (but I still want to maintain a reasonable pace), the box will shift down when I don’t want it to, likewise going up steep gradients it still seems to select a gear lower than I really want, so I tend to override it in these situations.
The other day tootling along at around 50mph behind loads of traffic, got it up to 54mpg average, that was the highest I had seen it, but yes, in the main it is in the 40s.
Think you sum it up well JCW.
Maybe VW could incorporate ‘grandad’ mode in the brochure. 🙂
In ‘Sport’ the devil himself takes over and it becomes a thing possessed. The difference between impulse speed and warp on board the Enterprise! 🙂
Noticed something today after these oil consumption issues. After some spirited driving pulling away from some traffic lights I saw quite a lot of bluey hazy smoke from the exhaust, felt sorry for the guy behind!
Noticed it once more when booting it to overtake something. Seemed to clear after that but not what you expect really from a new car. I am sure this is ok though.
That’s interesting Paul, I’ve had that too. I thought at the time that surely that couldn’t have come from my exhaust?! Hmm…
That is some reassurance I guess for me John if you have had this as well. It was quite a cloud actually, I was quite surprised. But, it was the first longish run it had for a few weeks, most of the time it has been stop/starting in town at low revs.
I decided to ‘blow the cobwebs away’ as it were, I was not going mad but just driving quickly/safely and getting the revs up a bit.
I had topped the oil up again yesterday by a small amount. I did not see the problem anymore later on, again will have to keep an eye on this. Now on 1,400 miles by the way.
I still have my issue with the message on my MFD saying “Check Safe locking! Owners manual.” when i turn off the ignition after a drive. It’s absurd, I lock the car in accordance with what the manual says everytime. Why do I always get this message, it’s driving me nuts! Please help, anyone?
PM – Go back to the dealer with it and get them to explain. I’m sure they’ll be happy to help.
PM – I have had this same message ‘Check Safe locking’ from new. I was originally pressing twice on the remote to lock, and assumed the car was politely informing me of my error – but now locking correctly I still get the message.
I have noticed when showing the tank mileage countdown, it sometimes seems to stick then jump down by 5 miles. (I only use this when below 60 miles). It was also pointed out to me yesterday that there is an on/off switch behind the drivers seat (B pillar) – think it may be air conditioning for rear passengers…
Hi PM/JCW
This may be of interest on the Skoda site http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/187398-help-required-with-mfd-message-please/, this refers to the ‘Check Safe Locking’ message.
It appears that its not an error of any kind but warning that the car will be deadlocked when you lock it. So if someone was inside the car (young kids for example), the car cannot be opened from inside.
Mine does not do this, but again from this thread, it would seem it has to be de-activated by VCDS, which means a trip to the dealer. I am sure it is a case of them hooking a laptop to it and de-activating the warning. It should not be chargeable.
Mine was obviously set differently upon collection, probably depends on the dealer.
Thought I’d share a few photos of my car now that I’ve fitted the sat nav and I think it blends in pretty well with the rest of the interior.
As an aside, I’ve done about 700 miles in mine now and it doesn’t appear to have used any oil. I’m also getting the safe locking message, although it doesn’t bother me that much.
I’ll try adding the link to the photos now….
http://s1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff451/Schumacher9/
Hi Schumacher
The car looks great (and very mean with the LEDs!). The sat-nav looks neatly integrated, too – well done!
Oh, so basically, the car needs to refer the same warning about safe locking everytime. As a safety feature, possibly. Not because I might be locking the car wrong everytime. Alhough, who knows, maybe I am. 😛 I just don’t see the point, especially if the car only has one driver, as is the case with myself.
About another 150 miles till my next oil check, so will keep you posted. I am going to try wash the car and take some overdue pics tomorrow.
I won’t fix the scratch now, as much as it bugs the living #@!$ outta me. In maybe a few months or so, I will go to a place that specialises in paint chips and have it done professionally. 😉 Hope you guys are enjoying your cars as much as I am enjoying mine.
Ok, as promised, here are a few pics of my car.

Hi PM
Car looks great in silver, quite muscular I think. Haven’t seen many in that colour either, only a VW press car in the mags. Still have yet to see a single GTI on the road.
Great pics PM, like the shot with your Xenons on. 🙂
@Rich – I have only seen the one Polo GTI on the road, a black one a couple of weeks back, lets hope it stays rare!
Rich, I swear it was so weird the day I went to go get my car from the dealership, I saw one on the way there (also a silver one), and one on the way back (a white one). The GTI badge really messes with people’s heads, though too – I always see discussions happening. So funny, they might as well be saying ‘Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No! It’s Superman!’ Hehehe.
Paul, those are just the daytime running lights. If the Xenons were on, they would have flooded the picture. I took the shots late in the day for maximum effect. I can take a pic with the Xenons on if you want.
Thanks for the nice comments, guys. 😀
Sorry PM – I should have known about the xenons, I do not have them you see – LOL.
I dont think I need a picture thanks, as you say it will wash it out completely. This weekend, I will see how many mpg I can get, that is in oil not petrol – LOL 🙂
No problem Paul, I’m so sorry it turned out too look so serious to you, because I never intended it that way mate. 😉 I have yet to check the oil for the second time, about 100 miles to go.
I was just wondering about earlier comments with reference to smoke when ‘booting it’, if you know that overfilling with oil can cause it to be discarded through the exhaust system and create smoke (not at all trying to be funny. Or at all saying this is the case, just putting it out there).
No worries PM, no I saw the funny side of it, don’t worry. Yes as for the oil, checked it again today and again it seemed on the low side. I would say it is just above area ‘C’ as described in the manual (page 210).
I am always nervous of over filling so always add very small quantities each time. I have not put anymore in today and I have not seen anymore blue smoke either (thank goodness).
Re: Oil consumption. You only have to Google ‘oil consumption and TSI engine’ to see that there may be a bit of an issue. As we know the engine is in many VW cars.
Found this whilst looking for ‘oil consumption’. A lot of information on how our engine works.
http://www.volkspage.net/technik/ssp/ssp/SSP_359.pdf
Thanks for that interesting link JCW, I will have a read of that sometime. Just back on the oil theme, had email from my dealer today, but nothing really that we don’t already know.
They said, yes, oil use will be greater up to 3000 or so miles. They were not too concerned about the smoke coming out of the exhaust, as they said that it could produce smoke after a period of low RPM which is the situation I had.
I am still only on 1,400 so still very early days.
Well car is finally here. Looks great and drives just as well. Nobody up here has one yet so gets many looks. Far better than the Cooper S I had before. Back to parking over two bays at Tesco again I’m afraid! Will have to keep a eye on the oil though as you all have mentioned.
Great news AllyE… enjoy!
AllyE, put up some pics! Please. 😀
I did an oil check today and it is in the middle of the hatched area between the twp orange markers. At just over 500 miles, this will be the first time I have to top up oil, I am thinking just one pint. Will do that tomorrow. The good stuff is expensive though, I hope they are right when they say it’s only in the beginning.
Just seen the ‘Your Car’ supplement in the ‘Press and Journal’ local paper up here. Its a two-page colour review of the GTI and gives it an absolutely fantastic report throughout. The heading says ‘It’s a German fire cracker and one that will reignite your passion for VW’. OK, I know its only a local newspaper but the review…!!
AllyE, hope you are enjoying your car as much as I am enjoying mine. If you wanna see my car, just click ‘Older Comments’ at the bottom of the page (it’s the page right before this one), I have put some links to some pics. Would love to see your car. Maybe you could take some close up pics of the article in your newspaper too? On the other hand, I could just paste them again I suppose. Here they are.

Good news,
I’ve just had an e-mail from the dealer to say my car has been in the UK as of last night.
Not long now.
Scott
Hi all
Good news that the majority of cars seem to now have arrived with people, and fantastic news, Scott, that yours will be with you soon. Following the oil comments closely.
We’re getting a VW UK loan press car GTI in August for a couple of weeks to take to Dorset on holiday. Anywhere in particular we should go?
Finally, 463-mile, 2011 Polo GTI on sale at Scunthorpe VW retailer with 18″ alloys. Three cars on VW’s approved locator with panoramic sunroof: http://ow.ly/4A2lH
Hi Rich, I hope you enjoy the loan press car to Dorset and have a good time there. Not sure where (in particular) you should go, having not been there myself. I am interested in the wheels on the car in the link you posted though. A link to the supplier of the wheels would be great. 😀

Hey guys, sorry I have gone quiet for a while… work has been manic! I have done over 4000 in mine now and still no issue with the oil! Hopefully gettin’ my windows and roof done soon! Still loving my car and wouldn’t change it for the world. Am lookin’ at a remap at the end of the summer to 220bhp and 5.5 seconds to 60… NICE! 🙂
James, just to be sure, you DO know that your car will break if you don’t top up the oil? Don’t you?
Hope everyone is still enjoying their cars. I’ve done about 1,500 miles in mine now and is definitely starting to loosen up a bit. It’s used a little bit of oil but nothing to worry about and I’ve not had to top it up yet.
By the way are Polo GTIs like waiting for buses? Having never seen another one on the road since they were launched, I’ve now seen two different ones in three days that are local to me.
It would also appear that the sunroof is now back on the options list.
Schumacher, I’ve done about 800 miles and had to top up with more-or-less a pint of oil. On the other front, I saw no Polo GTIs like the one we have till the day I went to go fetch mine… One on the way to the dealer and one on the way back home and not a single one since. Here’s the thing though, I have to drive around A LOT as part of the work I do. So you would think I should have seen plenty. I swear it’s true when they say sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction man. LOL.
I have been a bit quiet for a while, got up to 1,800 miles now and to date 1.5 litres of oil which I think is normal anyway, I suspect the consumption is slowing a little.
Just got back from a longish trip and fuel consumption was about 47mpg which I thought was pretty good considering a lot of traffic and braking/accelerating (no motorway).
Did have one moment with the DSG, on some steep hills I went fully manual as I am not keen on it changing into to low a gear both up and downhill.
When arriving in a town, I went to move the lever back into ‘full auto’ when the car was travelling at about 10mph, I heard a distinct mechanical noise at that moment, I think the box was in the middle of a downshift and at the sametime I moved the lever over, was a bit disconcerting but car seemed none the worse for that, the box must be be able to cope with the driver making a change at the precise same moment the DSG makes a downchange.
The number of different permutations and combinations that the DSG software has to cope with must be staggering but I hope I did not hit a bug so to speak! 🙂
Don’t get me wrong here, I love my car. My next car, if I ever need one, will definitely be a manual transmission again though. I really do like the DSG compared to an automatic tranny. Let’s be honest here… You can give it any fancy name you want and even give it 7 clutches, DSG still means automatic. :P~~~
Yes, I tend to agree PM, about 90% of the time I love it, but that remaining 10% I still think the driver can do a better job of optimising the gears/revs for the conditions.
It’s the hills where I think it is not quite so good, always seems to select to low a gear which calls for manual intervention.
Someone is in for a good week. Whilst driving along M4 on Tuesday (26 Apr) I passed car transporter with VWs and amongst the cars was a silver Polo GTI.
I passed it at Chippenham (Jn 17) heading towards South West/Wales.
Andy
Maybe it’s my age but having mine for almost 4 months and 3800 miles, it took me some time to settle into driving confidently such a fast car with an auto box. My first standing start was on an early Sunday morning in ‘Sport’ at traffic lights with no other cars about. Flooring the pedal it took me about 400 yards before my brain caught up with my body so I could reign in the beast, (I actually stopped the car!) thinking what the hell have I done buying this! It took some time to reduce my heart rate back to normal.
Three and a half months later I don’t even look what gear I’m in, I just point and shoot, confidently dropping it into ‘Sport’ as required. I personally would not want to go back to a manual… but each to their own. BTW I’ve stopped using oil, level set at 3/4 hatched area.
I hope you all enjoy yours as much as I do mine.
Nice write up JCW, yes it does fly when you want it to! Interesting about the oil, we still only have 1800 on the clock, and I am sure the consumption is not quite so bad, but I have just recently bought a new 1 litre Castrol Edge top up for £17!
I still need to keep an eye on it though, but yes, I love the car!
PM – Yes I am quite aware that a car will break without oil but it’s still full lol!
Does anyone’s gearbox sort of ‘clunk’ occasionally when they change from ‘Park’ to ‘Reverse’ or ‘Drive’? Also my window is squeaking when it’s done up and I drive over a bump. Think it’s the rubber lol…
Hi James, I can’t say I have heard that particular ‘clunk’ that you describe, I did have an issue that I mentioned on one of my earlier posts (28th April) where I got almost a grinding kind of noise when I moved the shifter back to full auto from the manual position. Car was going very slowly at the time, it was almost like I interrupted the auto downshift and got some cog clashing!
Hmm, thanks Paul. I think I’m gonna take her into VW for them to have a look at it. 🙂
James, I have noticed going over speed bumps the rubber in the door squeaking, although it seems to be fading a bit.
The issue with the *clunk* noise on the tranny, I doubt that it is anything to worry about. I get it too but I find it to be more of a natural working noise rather than something getting damaged. There is a guy at work that has an Audi with a DSG box, I will ask him if he hears any such noise and post what he said (for an objective point of view, of course). Also, with our cars being new, some tightness may be a factor that might be smoothed out over time. DSG, while being a relatively new enhancement, has been around a while and very likely been debugged (no pun intended, LOL) if necessary and been revised. Or at least I hope so, for all of our sakes.
JCW, I am not saying for a second that I don’t like my car the way it is. Contrarily, I love the beast. Maybe I just need more time to bond with it LOL. Brilliant car. I am enjoying my car as much as you are yours.
I saw another one on the road today, on my way back from work just before 3pm. Candy white 3-door with standard headlights, no pano roof, 60 plate, on the M1 N, just outside London. That’s the 3rd one that I have seen, which may or may not have been the same car LOL. It would be really interesting to know the sales figures since release. Does anyone know where to find a reliable source to that statistic?
PM – sales figures: I’ll see if I can work some magic with VW UK. Seeing the chaps on 1 June.
I am totally at risk of looking like a complete idiot when I ask this, but can somebody please tell me where the car’s battery is?
PM – It’s under the spare wheel in the boot. 😉
Hi people,
I have *just* clicked over 1000 miles and would like to give some feedback over the oil issue. I have used a bit of oil (on two occasions, the first time more than the second, the sum being less than a pint) from when I got the car on Feb 9th.
Since the last time I added oil, I have driven another 350 miles (approximately) and the oil level still covers the hatched area. Next time I fill up with fuel I will check again, possibly giving a better idea about it. 8P
Thanks for the update PM, like us you don’t do that many miles, we are nearly up to 2,000 since Christmas, but we do have a 2nd car.
In that time I have put in about 1.75 litres of oil, and I think consumption is easing slightly, but I think it will be 5,000 or so until I can be sure.
I definitely think the engine is getting smoother and more responsive and also fuel consumption is slightly improved, but the main thing is we are enjoying driving the car!
As promised, I spoke to the other chap at work that has a car with DSG. It is definitely fine to hear a sound when you select one of the gear options as you describe, James. I notice a sound too, but it’s not alarming, more of an engaging sound that what you describe as a ‘clunk’.
Paul, I read your reply with interest. When I get to your present mileage, I would have used about a pint less oil, if the current trend is maintained. I find it extremely hard to believe there were posts from other chaps claiming not to have used any oil, hardly used and/or not having to add any. I do echo your comment about the main thing being your enjoyment of the car, though. I do too.
My fuel consumption, at best guess, comes close to that of the 2008 non-GTI 1.4 Polo (manual tranny) that this car replaced. Not bad considering the extra power under foot, eh? Granted, I don’t floor the accelerator every chance I get, but it’s so easy to grow horns with a car like this. 8D
PM – re the oil issue. I’ve done about 2500 miles in mine now and the oil is about one third down the dipstick – I’ve not added any yet. I’m not sure how this compares with anyone elses.
That is unbelievable Schumacher, 2500 miles with no additional oil. It just proves it does seem to vary from engine to engine. A lot of our driving does tends to be short journeys, that may have a bearing on the consumption.
I will be checking ours again this weekend although we have done no more than 150 miles since I last checked.
Re: Oil
Mine is being looked at by the dealership and I’m due to take it back soon for evaluation. It does seem to go through copius amounts of oil and I’m now around 8000 plus miles. The engine has just won another international award for innovation, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t issues with it.
I will be very interested to hear what your dealership say John. I have just checked ours and had to top up with a small amount again, 2100 on the clock now. This takes it to about 2 litres from new, the manual says a litre of oil ‘up to’ 2000km (1250 miles) so I am over that threshold.
I did have a thought though. I wonder whether the level settles somewhat when it reaches a certain point on the dipstick (like 1/3 up the hatched area) before taking considerably longer to drop further? I don’t think it is particularly linear but it does seem to drop to that sort of level quite quickly, thing is with oil, you can’t take chances and I would be too paranoid to test that theory!
Bottom line though, of the new cars I have owned the in last few years, I have never had to be as attentive to the oil level as I have with the Polo.
I spoke to one of the mechanics at our work and he says the level is supposed to be half way up the hatched area *shrug*. Opinions are like asses, everybody has one. 8P
Chaps, was out driving two Polo GTIs today. All I can say is that you’re all so lucky! It’s a fabulous car: http://twitpic.com/55jm8n Report soon.
PM – As you said in an earlier post, my windows also squeak when going over bumps. Have done 6400 miles in mine now. 😮 lol
Any of you driving along the M4 in your white Polo on Sunday about 6.30pm. You were between Chippenham and Swindon.
Looked good.
Andy
Chaps, still awaiting official sales figures for new GTI, but http://www.howmanyleft.co.uk says that there are 80 on the roads up to the end of last year. I think Volkswagen UK wanted to sell 1000 in a year.
That answers that then Rich. Mine was the one registered in Q3.
Andy – That was quite possibly me! lol
I loved playing around with howmanyleft to see what sort of numbers for each type are out and about. I had been thinking about numbers sold of my GTI.
Rich – if 1000 is the VW UK target, I’m tempted to say, well maybe if they hurried up and built them, then they might sell them.
James – thanks for saying it might be you, are you Wiltshire based?
Andy
Oil consumption update.
Mine has completed the first 1000 mile test as stipulated by the dealership. On the car’s return they advised me that it had consumed too much oil and it was near to the oil light coming on again.
They spoke to VW who advised another 600 mile test and this time they had to weigh the oil before loading and they will have to weigh the oil on the car’s return. Presumably this is to definitively see how much oil is being consumed. The dealership advises me that the engine appears not to be bedding down as it should and this can cause piston problems amongst other things. It’s a major deal.
I spotted some guy on the Piston Heads website reporting oil consumption problems with the same car.
My advice is if your car is not using oil and you feel it’s OK then that’s good but if you think it’s using too much then get to your dealerhip and ask them to do a proper consumption test!
For me it will get sorted I’m determined in that!
John – it is good that VW appear to be taking your oil consumption problem seriously. There is obviously a huge variation in the amount of oil that the engines are using. I bought a litre of oil the other day, just in case. I’ve now done 2,700 miles in my GTI and only put in 200 ml to get the level back up to the top of the dipstick.
Andy – I am Berkshire-based but right on the outskirts lol… Junction 14 of the M4, are you local to me then?
Hi James – I’m down the road in Swindon.
Oh, What colour is your GTI Andy?
On the subject of oil again, pulling away at a roundabout today I could not help but see a plume of bluey coloured smoke coming out of the exhaust.
This happened a few months ago as well, it quickly cleared but you just don’t expect to see it.
Car has hardly been used in the last 2 weeks as we have been on holiday so only short journeys since, but I am not comfortable seeing this.
Yes I get the plume on hard acceleration.
I see one guy on another forum is about to have VW fit a new engine, don’t think I’m far behind him.
Interesting you get the same John, this was just pulling away from a roundabout though so probably less then 2,500 rpm.
We have just notched up 2,200 miles so still very low, I had to add a bit more oil this afternoon, so that is over 2 litres in that mileage. I am wondering how long I need to leave it before mentioning to VW.
I did make one enquiry with VW about 3 months ago, saying that it was burning oil faster than I thought, but the response was “it will use oil” given that it is a new engine. I did not persist then, but I am wondering when it will settle or whether there is a fundamental ‘fault’ or problem here?
Mine is back in the garage this week for evaluation. A friend of mine in the industry said that if VW suspect a problem then they’ll most likely just call the problematic engines back and fit new ones. They can then do diagnostics in their own time.
I was given the same advice as you Paul initially, but as I have now covered over 9000 miles in the car with no oil improvement I certainly have a case. To be fair my dealership is very good and also agree that there is high oil consumption and are keen for it to be sorted. (They better be or I won’t be buying the Polo R from them!) 🙂
Will be interested to hear what they say John. There certainly does not seem to be a problem with power or fuel consumption but you wonder what long term effect it will have.
I did some ‘spirited’ driving in it today and again on occasion I saw some blue smoke out the back.
Yes, yours has done over 4 times the mileage we have done and you would have thought things should have settled a long while back.
I have fired off an email to my dealer expressing my concern but not expecting much back given that the mileage is still very low.
Hey guys, I think that this could be an issue with the engine. I have done 7.5k miles in mine now and have only put one litre of oil in it since I got the car in March (and I have checked regularly and it’s always perfect). Also I do drive mine quite hard on occasion and I can honestly say that I have never noticed this plume of smoke. I will do some digging on this as well being as I start my new job at VW a week Monday. 🙂
Well I hope there is no problem with the engine James. I sent an email to my dealer at the beginning of the week (which they have acknowledged) but have had no answer yet. I would have expected an answer quite quickly if all they were going to say, the engine is new give it a chance, after all I am still on only 2,300.
But the fact there is a bit of a delay has made me think whether there has been some kind of issue raised within VW and they are waiting to find out what to do next.
I may be completely wrong but you never know. All I know is the first 2000 miles has cost me £34 in oil.
I can tell you that VW issue piston ring upgrades to solve the problem… I’m having them.
Have told my dealer that I don’t intend to spend the next twelve months back and forth to them. This fix has to work or I want a new engine.
Sounds like I am in the same situation as you John, it still sounds like major work for an engine that has been around for a while. Then again tuning it for 180PS obviously has to cope with greater tolerances so it can’t really be compared to ‘normal’ 1.4 TSI engines.
My car is a Dec 2010, again possibility ones that left the factory some months after have upgraded piston rings?
Good evening.
I have enjoyed reading all of your comments over the past few weeks having been to see a red 3-door GTI last Sunday (26 June) for the first time to see whether I would prefer it over many other cars on my shortlist – and I did!
So I ordered one last Wednesday and I should collect it this Friday (8 July).
I test drove a 3-door one last week for the first time. It was an 11-plate, just over 4k, deep black pearlescent, sunroof, touch-screen radio and sensor pack. I would have been the second owner (after the garage).
I never intended to buy a brand new one (mainly because I wanted to get my hands on a new car quickly) and my “wish list” comprised of (1) cruise control (standard), (2) xenon headlights and (3) power-folding wing mirrors. The latter isn’t even an option on the Polo, which bemuses me, especially as the Cupra comes with them as standard. I would have been happy to get any of these, but none were real deal breakers. So I began talking numbers with the dealer.
However, the dealer then offered me a brand new one, which hasn’t yet been registered. I’d be the first owner and it’s got 17 miles on the clock. It doesn’t have xenons, but I was very pleased with the overall package, so I bought it. It is also in deep black pearlescent, 3-door, sensor pack, multifunction steering wheel and rear tinted windows. I had to sacrifice the touch-sreen stereo and sunroof, but thought it was definitely worth it to be the first owner with practically zero miles.
I’m very much looking forward to getting it on Friday, and I appreciate your comments to date – it’s good to know there is somewhere to come to share experiences and ask questions! Will hopefully provide an update once I got a few (gentle) miles under the belt (whilst keeping a close eye on oil levels!).
My two queries at this stage are:
(1) What type of petrol are people using? Are you opting for Shell Optimax or the BP etc. equivalent? Or is anyone using standard supermarket? I live very close to a supermarket filling station, so that’s convenient. There is a shell garage which is a bit of a drive, but my current thoughts are that it is worth it. I suspect I will be opting for the better grade stuff.
(2) One VW dealer close to me has a great black 3-door which they have upgraded alloys on. They are still 17s, but are the Golf’s Monza 2 (i.e. shadow on the inside). I think they look great. I believe they have had the standard alloys customised, as opposed to switching for new ones. Has anyone done anything similar to their cars or know a good way of investigating this option in a cost-effective way? A dealer I spoke to suggested a figure of £2k…
Many thanks
Hi Joe,
I definitely think you made the correct decision regarding buying brand new if you had the choice available to you, I always wonder how it would have been treated in those 4000 miles. Exciting stuff eh?
Regarding the fuel, I try if possible to put the higher grade fuel in, but I certainly don’t make a point of it. VW do recommend using higher octane fuel and I swear it runs more efficiently, but I am not too fussed about being ‘loyal’ as it were to a particular brand. On my last tankful of Shell V-Power, I got an average of 42 mpg as opposed to about 39 on normal unleaded, but maybe the traffic conditions etc were better this time round.
Can’t really answer your question regarding the alloy wheels, maybe somebody else on here can advise.
Don’t worry about the oil, I am going to put a post up later with an update, but that is not to say your car would be affected, highly unlikely I would say.
Good luck with the car, you will enjoy it!
Oil update – my VW dealer got back to me today and they want to see the car and keep it a week for investigative tests.
They would not be drawn on what they need to test (no surprises) but they did say there is a VW technical note for them to follow up for this engine.
The fact they readily booked in a week’s workshop allocation for the car proves it must be an issue that needs dealing with asap.
So it is booked for 2 weeks’ time where I will be given a loan car. As John said earlier in the thread they will no doubt be looking at these piston ring upgrades. The final straw for me this weekend is that I noticed the level had dropped off again after covering less than 200 miles.
I am disappointed to say the least but I don’t think everyone needs to worry, it seems to be only affecting some engines, I would guess at the earlier ones that were registered in 2010.
I will post back updates to this when the work is carried out.
Many thanks Paul, it is very exciting! I’ve already got 3 colleagues keen to come out with me + an excited girlfriend and equally excited parents – it’s proving quite popular already!
I totally agree re the way demonstrators are driven. I know that different driving styles can benefit a car, but not so early in it’s life.
I suspect my test drive was rather tame compared to most who get behind the wheel, but I was on completely unfamiliar roads and I was looking to buy it. I had no desire to do anything that might ruin it!
Any way, it should also help the residuals in 3 years’ time, not that I’m looking that far ahead just yet!
Thanks for the comments re the fuel. I will aim to use a higher grade fuel whilst I bed the engine in and see how I get on with it.
I’m sorry to hear about your car. I hope they’ve given you a GTI equivalent as a loan car. Hope all gets sorted asap.
Many thanks
Joe
Welcome aboard Joe!
Hope the site can offer you something interesting.
Might be able to help with the wheels. They are an option in other countries, and there’s a pic somewhere on the site of a GTI with them on at last year’s Woerthersee GTI event.
Here’s a photo of the Finnish market options page: http://www.polodriver.com/pologtifinnishoptions.jpg
Don’t know if you’ll be able to order them here, though. If I can find a part no I’ll post it up.
Also, of interest to you and the rest of the chaps, is that two GTIs are going to magazines for long-term tests. Eve magazine has one, as does MSN Cars:

Many thanks Joe – you will have some fun with it for sure. I suspect my loan car will be a base Polo or VW Fox, they rarely oblige and lend you a car of comparable spec.
Greetings from Croatia, after reading on the web I wanted to leave reply.
I have 2011 Polo GTI and it has been eating oil from the beginning. About 1 litre every 1000 km, so dealer started investigation as I was insisting on it. I have high degree in mechanical engineering so I know this was not normal and was bothering me.
To make a story short, my Polo got new engine last week. Interesting fact that needs to be pointed out is that I got official information that first 20,000 engines had faulty piston rings and they caused oil consumption. BUT my engine was not in first 20,000 so there was no problem with piston rings because they were already upgraded in factory.
Although I had latest engine I had serious problems with oil consumption and my engine was changed by my dealer. They did that on their own expense because factory decided that oil consumption is OK and engine doesn’t have to be changed! So now they are solving this case directly with factory. Previous engine was sent to Germany for inspection.
Car was driven per manual. Engine was changed at 6600 km.
If you have any questions I will try to answer.
Tom
Hi Rich/Paul
Many thanks for the info re the wheels. I will definitely be looking into this in the near future to see how expensive it will be.
Thanks also for the info re Evo and MSN. I’m a big Evo fan so will look forward to reading their comments in due course. Having read their group test on the GTI recently, I hope they will appreciate it on a day-to-day basis, as it’s got very different qualities to the Clio RS!
Paul, it’s a bit of a cheek if they downgrade you for that length of time. I’d expect them to offer you something much more comparable! Hopefully you won’t be stuck in it too long.
Interesting write up there CroTom, I am half expecting them to say I need a new engine. I won’t be happy if that is the case, I have only 2,400 miles on the clock and the disturbance caused by removing an engine with all of its sensors, hoses, pipes, wires etc makes me feel nervous.
I don’t think you can easily reject a car if it is not up to scratch, you have to give the dealer/manufacturer chance to repair it to factory standard. I will wait and see what they say though.
@Joe – I am not expecting much in the way of a courtesy car Joe, it will actually be my wife that will drive it the most but I would imagine it will be a base model, Polo or Fox.
Hi Joe, I am fairly sure that if you want Monza 2s they have to be imported from another country and I also know that they are rather expensive… I will find out a price next week.
James
Hi Joe
Trawling though my back posts of the site, I found this picture from the GTI Wörthersee meeting in Austria from May last year. It shows a Polo GTI on the Volkswagen official stand with the Monza 2s. Does look good!
http://www.polodriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2010-polo-gti-worthersee-2010.jpg
Good luck with the search! I’m sure James will come up trumps.
Hi guys
Many thanks for your emails re the wheels and hi to CroTom too.
Thanks for looking into this James and the pic does look great Rich. I might call the dealer I spoke to the other week and see if I can get more info off him, but based on James’ comments I feel the price may put me off. I do love the standard alloys in any event so it’s not all bad!
I picked my car up on Friday morning. The VW dealer (Vindis in Huntingdon) was super efficient and very pleasant to deal with. I have clocked up 270 miles so far and I checked the oil tonight and it’s spot on – so far, so good. I reckon I’ll do a further 350-400 miles by this time next week so I will keep checking.
As for the car, I’m loving it! So pleased that I chose the Polo over the others I looked at. Been taking it nice and easy, so I’m sure I will be even more pleased once I can start enjoying the engine even more.
Hope CroTom and Paul get yours sorted asap so you’re back out enjoying yours too.
Joe
Nice one Joe, glad you have got your car! Yes, I would not expect any oil issues with yours but wise to keep a close check anyway being a new engine.
I checked my oil tonight, it had gone down marginally but I did not see any blue smoke out of the exhaust today. Nevertheless it is going into VW in a weeks time for it to be tested.
Enjoy your car!
Hi Joe
Meant to post this the other day, but took some time to find it. Here’s car that was for sale a few months ago through Volkswagen’s approved dealer network. It’s got both the pano sunroof AND the Monza 2s, so they must be available somehow!
http://www.polodriver.com/fy11nfe.jpg
Hi guys,
Not posted for a while, so hope all of you are still happy with your cars.
Rich, those alloys you are on about are the same as the Golf equivalent and are in the region of £500 each, which I think is extortionate at the very least. The standard wheels are good enough for me.
With the oil issue, an update is still pending as I am waiting for the current tank of petrol to exhaust. So far I have used about a pint, but I haven’t checked the dipstick since I last filled up. The filling station forecourt is a good place to check, since you can rely on it to be level. I have just less than half a tankful until I check it again and have driven about 1500 miles. I will post again after get this info.
Joe – Monza 2s (Shadow) are roughly £500 for the set of alloys plus about £100-£150 per tyre. So if you want to put Dunlop tyres (I assume this is what are on your 17″ Monzas) It will cost you about £1100 with tyres. (On VW’s site the wheels are £465 for the Golf GTI with tyres included – this is a promotional price when you buy the car).
On the other hand I have been informed that there are some very good Monza Shadow imitation alloys out there for a few hundred quid – still trying to track down where these are coming from.
James
Well – I handed my car over this morning to VW to start investigating the oil consumption issues. Now got a 1.2 Polo as a courtesy car, which I must admit is not as slow as you would think. Should get the GTI back towards the end of next week depending on what course of action they are going to take.
Paul – Will be interested to hear how you get on. My piston ring upgrade is scheduled for August 1st.
Hi John, for sure I will report back this week. They have not told me anything about what they will be doing, only doing ‘investigative tests’. I would imagine though it will be the piston ring upgrades as you say.
I was thinking, this could mess up the service schedule, if they do the piston ring upgrades and renew the oil, whether my car would still warrant a service in 5 months time, I am not so sure.
But yes, I will be waiting very keenly for that phone to ring this week!
Hi ppl,
As promised, here’s the oil situation with me. I have 1,500 miles on the clock and have used 2 pints of oil. The exhaust is black and sooty. I’m not sure what I am going to do yet or if I should.
Hi Guys,
Just a quick update from me, VW have confirmed excessive oil consumption and they are replacing the piston rings tomorrow, I will not get the car back before the end of the week as it is very labour intensive and they need to take their time.
@PM, do you mean pints or litres? If pints, I don’t think you need to worry as that is about 1.2 litres, that would fit in with the ‘running in’ schedule of about 1 litre per 2000km (1,400 miles). So you are right on the cusp of what is acceptable. If it is litres however, then you may well require the piston ring upgrade I’m afraid.
Another update from me, as you know my car has been with VW this week for the piston ring upgrades but…
At the 11th hour VW are insisting on a 1000km test (625 miles) which I know John mentioned earlier in the thread. This was disappointing as I thought I would be sorted, my dealer has acknowledged the problem but had to go along with VW’s instructions.
Tomorrow I will get the car back and then it will be retested after the stipulated mileage has elapsed.
My dealer has been good about it, but for an expensive repair VW want all the specific facts before authorising the work, so I guess I can see their view point.
Paul – I had to do the 1000 mile test followed by the 600 mile test. That should be enough. Don’t forget that one guy, a lawyer, is having a new engine. VW reluctantly obliging. He cited ‘breach of warranty’.
Hi John, interesting story there with the lawyer!
I have got my GTI back now and have started the countdown (1000km or 625 miles). My dealer said it can go back before then if I have concerns as I reckon it will get very low if I go the full distance. I am not expecting to have to do another 600 mile test after though, I am surprised they have requested that from you.
My dealership have been excellent, but at the end of the day they have to go along with what VW say, even though they argued the case for my car. I am sure I saw a small amount of oil smoke out the exhaust when driving back from the garage!
Hi all
James, many thanks for looking into this. I think on my colour car these alloys will look awesome, so I will consider it in due course. But I also love the standard alloys, so I’m happy to wait and see what I decide in a few months.
I was tempted to buy one with them on, but the deal I got was too tempting, and that was the priority.
I’ve had mine 15 days now and I will hit 1,000 miles tomorrow. So far it has been brilliant.
My sister just moved to the US and bought a new Mini. The dealer there told her not to use cruise control for the first 1,000 miles. I wasn’t advised this and the handbook doesn’t appear to comment on it. I did ask my dealer, but they haven’t responded. I haven’t used it for excessive periods and I can perhaps see the logic in not running the engine at the same RPM for too many miles too early on in its life.
As for the oil problems, I hope you guys get it properly sorted soon. The end result needs to be right for you and within a reasonable amount of time. If it keeps dragging on with no positive results, I’d be tempted to involve a publication like What Car? For a lay person, that sort of free assitance can be useful. I suppose if the dealer is helpful and is properly “fighting your corner” it is good, but provided the end result is the correct one for you guys. I’d carefully document each development (i.e. problem, notification to dealer, response, including the time it has taken them to act each time, their suggested solution, and the length of time you’re without the car and are instead with a “lesser” car), which should show the “reasonableness” of their response.
Fingers crossed for you guys.
Many thanks Joe, sounds like you have been enjoying your car, can’t believe you are nearly up to 1000 miles, we are only on 2,500 in 7 months!
Yes – you must be getting bored of reading about oil issues now and it is a pain really to get it resolved. I have just started the countdown of my 625 miles (1000km) until I take it back in. The good news for you, is that your car being several months newer should not be affected as VW have taken corrective action with the piston rings on later models.
What is really annoying now is that I am not supposed to top it up until I take it back, so I can’t really take it far away (not like 100s of miles away anyway). The dealer has topped it right up now, so much so I can’t even see the hatching marks on the dipstick so it should be good for the 1000km.
I am on a kind of ‘priority’ with my dealer, so as soon as I want to bring it in, I should only need a couple of days’ notice and they will have a courtesy car ready and they can do the work.
Its all a pain, but it should all be sorted soon!
Paul – 2500 in 7 months is very impressive lol! I have done 8700 in 5 months :S lol!
Last week I had my roof and wing mirrors wrapped in Satin Black and also had my rear windows tinted extremely dark and my front windows are pretty dark too! I will post pics soon as it does look very nice! 🙂
Yes, we have another car as well James hence the very low mileage. 🙂
Hi,
Just less than 2000 miles and 3 pints used. Yes Paul, pints. 😛 I had an old banger that used less oil. :/
Hi PM, blimey – it is quite a while since anyone posted on here! 3 pints in 2000 miles, I think that is about 1.8 litres, yes – that is still quite a bit. That seems to be a little bit better than myself but not much.
When I posted on 22nd July, I stated that I was on the 1000km test, so far I am only 230 miles into it, so a bit of a way to reach the 625 miles equivalent! Interestingly the oil level does not appear to have dropped at all, but I think this is simply because the dealer has brimmed it right up (more than I was doing), so it appears on the dipstick at least that the level is not dropping.
As ever, keep an eye on yours, that still sounds like too much oil yours is using. 🙁
Hi chaps
Great to see the thread is still being used, if a little less frequently these days. Hope you’re not all going elsewhere! 😉
Remember we mooted the idea of a meet-up when everyone got their cars? Just wondering if that’s still of interest to people. An informal meet, possibly over lunch somewhere, so we can see the cars in one place and have a get together. Will be covered on the site of course, with a report and pictures. Over to you!
Our silver GTI test car (J6 VWW) arrives on Thursday, so I’ll re-read some of the comments again, although oil usage will more likely than not be an issue, as it’s only here for two weeks!
Hi guys!
Some new info from me. As some of you know due to excessive oil consumption my engine was changed.
But problems with new engine started. In first 2000km engine used 1L of oil. I have added 0.6L of oil after that and it lasted only 900km. Yesterday, an additional 0.5L was added.
I have a Masters degree in mechanical engineering and I am working as a design engineer in German company that is supplier for major car companies, including VW and I have to admit that something wrong is going on with this engine (1.4 TSI). I am really worried about whole situation.
Re oil consumption problems.
My advice would be to make sure you’ve sold the car before the warranty ends!
It is a shame if you are thinking along those lines John. It almost seems that VW don’t know exactly how to fix it, the upgraded rings are the recommended fix, but it seems even replacement engines are not guaranteed to resolve it. Surely cars coming out of the factory now don’t have this problem?
I am rather hacked off with it (as we all are) – I will go mad if VW puts us on another 1000km test when we take it back in a few weeks.
Hi Paul, my piston ring upgrade should have been completed by now but my dealership messed up the ordering of the darn things. Now scheduled for the beginning of next month… wasn’t best pleased.
Don’t get me wrong I love the car but if all goes to plan I can ditch it for the Polo R in 2013 just before the warranty expires.
Hi John, no – I bet you were not best pleased. As far as I am aware, my dealer have the piston rings in as they are expecting my car back very soon.
I checked my oil level earlier and surprisingly again, in nearly 400 miles the level does not seem to have dropped at all. Maybe it will suddenly drop?
Another concern for me is that if the issue does drag on, it could start to affect resale values later on. I think we are a way off that, but once cars are ‘labelled’ with known bugs/faults, it is bound to affect their desirability for resale.
Rich – I’m up for this meet! Where would it be?
I’ve been noticing that some Polo GTIs have a black fin, part of the rear aerial, mine doesn’t… I want one! 🙂
John – I might be wrong, but I think the fin is the aerial for the factory fitted sat nav system.
Guys I do not know if I made things clear. My first engine in car was already factory upgraded with new piston rings. As I said only first 20,000 engines had that problem, your dealer can easily check this using engine number. So my first engine had new rings and was consuming oil. My second brand new engine shipped from VW is latest version and is again consuming oil and I am not pushing it hard.
So to be clear, cars coming from factory have this problem and piston ring replacement cannot be solution for our problem. Only for first batch of engines and VW officially made that clear.
Thanks CroTom for the clarification, though I think you’d been pretty clear about things.
Strangely my oil consumption (like Paul’s) has stabilized. To be honest I hope that the engine rectifies itself. I have been driving it very hard at times. Maybe the engine has finally bedded down? Don’t really want VW messing around with the engine if at all possible. I may ask to complete another mileage test just to be certain.
Schumacher you could be right. Maybe Rich could answer it as his test GTI, pictured on the home page, has one fitted to the roof.
John – yes the little fin on the roof is for the factory fitted sat nav. Like yourself, I don’t want VW to pull the engine apart if I can help it. The exhaust still looks very sooty though.
Hi John
Yes, the other chaps are right. The black fin is part of the factory sat-nav package, I think housing the 3G/GPS. I’ve got a press car GTI from Volkswagen UK for two weeks which has the RNS 310 unit fitted (colour sat-nav, MDI/iPod/SD card control.
J6 VWW is a lovely car – don’t want the nasty man from VW to take it away on 1 September. No oil light issues yet…
Hi James
Don’t know, somewhere central to all of you if possible. It would be nice if happened, but if not, maybe a profile of you and the car could be in order. 😉
There was I thinking that maybe after over 11,000 miles the engine had finally bedded down, oil consumption appeared normal, it hadn’t gone down. Then yesterday the red warning oil pressure light went on which is a big no-no. The car was escorted by breakdown to my dealer which is where it now languishes. Piston ring related I’m being informed and these are still delayed in Germany. The car must not be driven until the problem is sorted. G r e a t !
That is really terrible John, I am so sorry to hear this latest report from you. It’s getting somewhat ridiculous, as I am not confident that even replacement rings will sort it. It’s just not on with a £20k car to have to lift the bonnet every other day to check the oil level.
I have read other reports about re-honing the cylinder bores, this is why I believe replacement engines have been authorised in some cases. I suspect they may replace the engine in your case.
Good luck, and please let us know what they say!
Just been for a quick spin this afternoon and I saw an enormous (no exaggeration) plume of blue smoke when pulling away again. There are some signs now of the oil level dropping slightly, 430 miles in. I am contacting VW to say I will be bringing the car back imminently, despite not having quite completed the full 1000km.
I put a link up earlier today to another Polo website, not approved link as of yet. It showed many guys talking about their Polo GTI oil probs. Some guys I recognised off this forum. New engines , piston rings, you name it and in many cases problems persist.
Now we know why VW was rumoured to be considering pulling the engine from future models.
Don’t reckon I will be sitting in my car for a good couple of weeks… it’s a joke.
Yes, it is a joke John, I am also lurking on at least one other forum (different guise). I really felt embarrassed this afternoon when the this plume of smoke emitted from the exhaust, I thought the car was going to breakdown on me. It’s a shame as the car drives fine if you ignore the oil problem, but like yourself, if the problem is never going to be solved properly, I will be getting rid before 3 years old. 🙁
Hi John, not had the pending link request, but would be interested in it, please. Hope your car gets sorted soon. Done over 800 miles in the Volkswagen UK press car, and absolutely love it – it’s a shame such a major problem blights the GTI.
Paul – thought I’d seen you somewhere else! 😉 Hope your problems get sorted, too. Nothing at all (unsurprisingly) from the press car yet, but it’s only done 3000 miles, goes back Thursday.
Many thanks indeed Rich. An idea when the press car was registered, as that one clearly does not have any issues? I have got 3k on the clock now, today – I did not see an oil smoke at all!
Hi Paul
Yes, I know exacty when the car was registered: February 2011, so that makes it six months old, and by the time it goes back, I’d have covered a third of the car’s total mileage!
Many thanks indeed Rich, I was curious really, mine is a Dec 2010, but it does seem as if the press car has no oil issues at all. Have fun with the car while you still have it! 🙂
Time to club together then and buy the press car, one that actually works. 🙁
My car is also from February 2011. And regarding blue smoke, yes, there is lot of blue smoke coming from exhaust and not necessarily from hard acceleration, you can cruise around and lightly tap throttle and there is blue smoke.
Gents
I’ve just checked my oil and it is about about 20% of the way down the hatched area of the dipstick which is where it was when I topped it up 2000 miles ago (I’ve now got about 4700 miles on the clock).
Therefore it is still using a little bit of oil, the exhaust trims are a little bit sooty, but I’m not getting clouds of blue smoke or pouring oil into it like some of the rest of you are.
Given that VW say in the manual say that it will use up to 1 litre in the first 1200 miles and consumption is likely to be higher for the first 3000 miles, should I be concerned as having completed 4700 miles it is still using a little oil?
By the way, my car was built in the first week of February – is it just the earlier cars that have the oil problems or are the problems affecting later cars too?
Your thoughts would be welcome.
Yes your right CroTom, even under the most modest of acceleration you can get the blue smoke, it seems more likely to occur if the engine has been running a constant revs for a while. Once you slow down or stop and start to vary the revs, you get the smoke!
@Schumacher – I don’t think you have any issues at all, sounds like normal oil usage to me. I would expect yours too settle even more as the mileage gets higher.
I would imagine it does just affect the earlier models, mine is a Dec 2010, (but more than likely built Oct/Nov 2010) but I am sure there are some ‘later’ models with the issue probably by virtue of being registered later.
Chaps
Maybe this particular press car (J6 VWW) is OK. The trims on the exhausts are slightly sooty, but no oil light yet. Interestingly, evo magazine are running J4 VWW, a white GTI, same spec (sat nav the only option) and I would imagine built around the same time. And… the oil light has come on. Been talking to one of the chaps running it and he’s going to tentatively mention the problems from this ‘forum’ in the next running report (first is in the current issue) when the magazine is published later this month. Don’t know if the other three press cars (not including ‘mine’, J5 VWW is red, and there are two others, OU60 YW…) are affected.
I am waiting now for my dealer to get back to me, (having covered the 1000km test), but as yet – no reply. I am wondering again whether VW are still not sure what to do here as I don’t think the replacement piston rings (scrapers) are the definitive fix.
Pleased Evo mag are aware of the oil/engine issues. I had been thinking that the car magazines should hear of our collective plight.
Update on mine… think it could be 3 weeks without the car, as my dealer is having problems getting the rings quickly. I’m firing warning shots across their bow! I think that they should be given the opportunity to fix things but I won’t hesitate with legal action if things get worse.
Hello,
My name is Callum, I am 21 and come from Essex. I test drove the GTI the weekend just gone, and all I can say is wow! Looking to place my order this weekend. Really not sure whether to go 3 door or 5! Sorry to hear about some of the oil problems that some of you are having.
Any idea on what the wait time is for a new GTI now?
Hi Callum
Welcome! Glad you liked the GTI. ‘Mine’ goes back to VW today. 🙁
One thing to bear in mind is that the three-door does have very heavy doors and they can catch in the wind if you’re not careful. The five-door doesn’t look less sporty in my opinion either. You’re lucky to have the choice!
Don’t know what delivery times are at the moment, but it may vary depending on build dates and those door options.
Whereabouts in Essex are you (I’m in Chelmsford) and where did you test drive the car?
It is down to personal choice. I prefer the three-door and think it does look sportier but if I had a family to drive around then I guess I’d go for the five-door. The 3-door comes from Europe and the 5-door is built in South Africa.
Fingers crossed for you Callum and I hope that you get one that works. 🙂 It is a cracking car most of the time.
I’m getting withdrawal symptoms what with mine stuck doing nowt at the dealership. 🙁
Hi Rich,
I am from Brentwood, so you’re just up the road from me! I had my test drive at the Romford VW on Saturday. Sorry to hear yours is going back, fingers crossed you and John get yours back asap.
I really do hope these issues have been ironed out of the new builds!
Couple of questions:
– Which extras are a must to get in your eyes?
– Any which you got at the time but hardly use? And any that you wish you got?
Callum,
Bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights make the car! Upgrade to colour touch-screen RCD 510 radio. Parking sensor display looks good on it too.
I forget which pack included the cruise control but I hardly use it.
Wish I’d gone for darkened glass from B-pillar and certainly wish I’d opted for that good-looking pano roof.
Callum – I reckon our pain will be your gain, as by the time you get your car, the oil consumption issues will be history. It is a shame that for such an exciting car, our initial experience has been spoilt by this problem but I am sure it will be sorted in due course.
Enjoy speccing it out, I would imagine you will have to wait until early 2012 though if a factory order.
Yeah, you’re probably right Paul! Well, I hope anyway.
Managed to get a 9% discount on the car as well which is handy, saving a total of around the £1700 mark.
Have gone with the 3-door in the end, Candy White, multifunction steering wheel, electric climate control, RCD 510, bi-xenon lights, and rear tinted windows. Have decided not to get the sensor pack which includes the cruise control.
Nice one Callum, good choice. Mine is also a Candy White 3-door, with climate control and DAB. I was not able to choose options as mine was a stock car at the time. Any idea when delivery will be?
Signing the forms and paying my deposit on Monday, so I will find out. Over the phone I was told around 16-20 weeks. Still uncertain whether to go for the xenon lights, do the LED daytime running lights come as standard on the car?
No they are part of the xenon package. Look very cool and makes the car stand out. I get many comments about them. Worth the dosh.
Thats what I thought. Ordering it tomorrow and still changing my mind from 3-door to 5-door. I am going insane.
Hi Callum, I dont know what your VW dealer has told you about lead times but there will be different lead times between the 3 and 5-door option as 3-door is made in Portugal and 5-door is produced in South Africa. 3-door therefore quickest to get from factory to port (16-20 weeks). Also 3-door looks a lot sportier and does suit the GTI brilliantly.
Deffo go for the Xenons as they really make the car stand out. If you are financing the vehicle which I assume you will be on PCP? I would STRONGLY recommend ordering the car with all the small cheaper options as well as the bits you want (DAB, Multi function Steering wheel etc) as it will barely add any money onto your monthly payment. I kick myself daily for not having the multifunction steering wheel on mine. Thats all from me. 🙂
Hi James,
Yeah the multifunction steering wheel is a must for me, and going for the DAB as well now.
This time tomorrow my order will be placed! It’s very exciting as this is my first new car. I’m coming from a 2001 1.4 Polo SE.
How long have you had yours for now James?
For me multufinctional wheel is a redundant choice and waste of money if you have touch screen. IMHO GTI steering wheel is much more beautiful without all those buttons. Real race car wheel. 3-door version does look a lot sportier. Again many people forget that B pillar is not near your shoulder and you have great visibility to either side and of course for us that are tall coming in and out is a lot easier.
My must-have list is:
1. Light package, includes everything
2. RCD 510, interior is class above with this unit
3. Climatronic, again useful and interior is upgraded
4. Drive comfort package, parking sensors and stuff
5. Tinted windows, white car stands out with tinted windows
I use regularly all of this stuff and do not regret any option I have added to this car. But one thing I miss and regret, I should have added heated windshield sprinkles (or however you call it) and heated seats. It is fantastic option in winter morning when you are in a hurry to get to the workplace and everything is frozen.
Hi guys
Been reading your forum about the oil problem. Now I see you guys are from UK and I’m in south Africa. My GTI now has 7000km and we have the oil issue. Oil consumption test has now started. Guys I feel so disappointed. VW must have known that they have issues.
I also notice the specs are not the the same in SA and UK. We have leather, MFS, heated seats and cruise control as standard. Bad about ours is that there are no xenons nor electronice climate control. Semi-climate only.
Does any one know what VW will do for us once they admit that there is a problem on this engin regarding oil?
Would have enjoyed manual shift, too.
Hi Jacques,
I can’t see VW making a big announcement about TSI engine problems, it would cost them too much to put right. They will wait for individual engines to fail and then attempt a fix. The TSI engine will be phased out in time. God help the second and third hand owners of these cars.
I’m currently driving a bog standard Polo with the “dull” option pack fitted. 🙂 My GTI has been taken to another county for the repair. Thankfully I can view the pic at the top of this forum to remind me what it looks like.
Don’t worry John, you’re in good company, I will be driving a bog standard 1.2 Polo on Saturday once mine goes in. I won’t be happy if they measure the oil and tell me to go away again until they decide what to do.
Any idea when yours is due back?
@Jacques – many thanks for letting us know about the issues you have encountered in SA, it is certainly a far-reaching problem, not just limited to these shores it seems.
Hi Guys,
Just an update. VW gave me a call yesterday to find out if I was happy with the service. When I mentioned that I was not happy about the fact that VW must have known about the problem long before the car was launched in SA. The reason being that being in SA we only get the cars 12 – 18 monthes after Australia and UK. I got one of the first 12 units in SA back in April 2011. So surely by the time it was launched here VW must have known about issues. The lady did not respond apart from saying that I should enjoy the remainder of my day. This really upsets me as I basically preach VW to my mates. Back in 2004 I bought my first car being a CITI Golf brand new (Golf 1 basically), and in 2010 I bought a 1.4 Comfortline Polo new again and loved both of them. I infact still have the Golf and with 170,000km it hase not used a drop of oil.
Now yes, it might cost VW to rectify the problem but look at what happed to Toyota regarding the problem they had with electronics on some of their cars. OK so VW ain’t causing people to lose there lives but still.
Now Audi will launch the S1 with the same TSI motor. Can they really take that risk? I will wait and see if infact they will launch the S1.
Sorry for writing a novel, but I am really upset about this as I am sure all of you are as well.
Best regards
Hi Paul,
Don’t let them mess you around, one test of 1000 and one of 600 miles should be sufficient. They are in breach of warranty and other stuff so let them know you know!
I fired a warning shot of legal action at the beginning of the week as things seemed stalled. It got things moving. I’m keeping a detailed diary just in case I need to legally pursue this. I don’t know how long it is going to take. While I know it is fair to let them try to solve the problem, I also know this has to be within a reasonable time frame. I will not let it drag on.
Was smiling to myself today thinking about the photo shoot Rich had mentioned. Quite funny if we all turned up in our Polo 1.2’s… not quite what was planned.
I see that VW will announce a new R model at Frankfurt next week, the Polo maybe? If it has another TSI engine I’m not sure I want one now!
Hi John, many thanks indeed for that. Yes – funny how as soon as you mention legal proceedings it get things moving again.
You, myself and everyone else have paid a lot of hard earned money for our cars, and for the time being you don’t have use of it, and at the same time it will be depreciating, not by much but even so.
In hindsight I wish I had kept my old car for another year, but I was offered a deal that I could not resist! Never mind, that’s done now but I won’t be accepting any ‘fob off’ or drawn out dealings with VW while the warranty clock ticks down (albeit 2 years away)!
I would like to think my dealer do treat me as a valued customer having bought 2 cars from them, but we shall see.
Good luck anyway with yours, I await updates with keen interest! 🙂
Hi chaps
Shame, it looks like the photoshoot won’t happen for a while now, if at all. Pictures of you all smiling cheerily next to your cars seems like a distant dream! It wasn’t supposed to be like this for you all.
You’re right John, there is a new R model at Frankfurt. A Polo would be nice, but I think it will be a Beetle. I’m happy to eat my words, though!
Finally, have any of you had a 2000-2002 Polo GTI in the past? Going to look at one tomorrow and wondered if they were a good/enjoyable car or not? This one looks great and is low mileage, but I know there have been gearbox problems etc…
Hi Rich,
Yes I had a 2001 GTI, looked nice in silver with the xenons etc. Think I had a recall over something but I don’t think it was gearbox related, could be wrong. It was a smart looking motor but as far as driving it was concerned I found my 1999 Polo 16V was more fun around the twists and turns of country lanes, gripped the road well… felt more balanced.
Well taking the car in tomorrow, have done 658 miles and the dipstick measurement is down to halfway!
Will see what they say next week!
@Rich – No, I am fairly new to VW ownership, we had a Fiesta ST prior to the GTI, that was a great fun car, in hindsight should have hung onto it a bit longer!
Good luck Paul! Keep us posted.
Cheers John!
I have postponed ordering mine for the time being, I don’t want to fork out for a car that is going to have this problem :(. Is there anyone whose car is fine on this forum, or are you lot just the unlucky ones?
Callum
Wise move for the time being… also be aware the engine is in a number of VW group cars, Skoda Fabia vRS for example.
I’ve ‘read the riot act’ to my dealer, will not put up with sloppy service and the clock is ticking!
My car is down at the garage now awaiting the oil test next week. I am with you John, I want this issue sorted once and for all, I don’t think replacing the rings is the answer. I am considering rejection of the car, I don’t want to have them muck around with a 9 month-old car replacing the rings and then realising it doesn’t work still, in which case a replacement engine may be the only proper solution.
@Callum, yes as John says, you are probably wise to hold off while this situation persists, I would think it unlikely that a 2012 delivery will have the same problems but you just don’t know. It’s a shame as you were no doubt looking forward to placing the order last week.
Thanks John. Went and saw it yesterday, and have (unsurprisingly) ended up buying it! Only 67,000 miles, silver, xenons etc. 4-owner car, new-ish cambelt, serviced by main dealer in January. Couple of scuffs on the front bumper and interior a little grubby, but hopefully nothing a thorough clean shouldn’t sort out. Interesting what you say about the handling of the 16V. A Polo owner with lots of Polo-driving history it would seem!
@Paul – good luck with everything this week. And Callum, shame you’ve postponed the order, but you’re right of course. These problems seem to have snowballed…
My solicitor told me don’t bother rejecting engine alone, just reject the whole car. ‘Not fit for purpose’.
Does your solicitor think you have a fair and reasonable case worth fighting for John. PS, Don’t feel the need to answer on an open forum, but I know everyone would be interested.
In my case, my dealer said they will fit the piston rings/scrapers this week. Whether this will work or not remains to be seen, frustratingly they are never drawn on answering direct questions about the problem, only that they are acting on instruction from VW’s technical department!
Sending you a private message on other forum.
Callum – I haven’t had a issue with my car at all. (Sorry guys. :o) )
Alright – don’t rub it in James! 🙂
There was a guy on another forum who said he was 18 and had a new engine at 4000 miles due to the oil problems, obviously not James then. 🙂
Work started today, at last, on my piston/scraper ring upgrade… all going well I am told.
Got my car back, work having all been completed. Have done 30 miles in it, all seemed fine. It felt very quick and responsive, but after a week in a 1.2 base Polo, it was always going to. Inspected car, all clean and tidy so dealer appears to have done a good job.
Let’s hope this works, did not see any smoke out the back. 🙂
Just picked my car up too after the piston ring upgrade. Fingers crossed. Really happy to be behind the wheel again with the weekend ahead. 🙂
Great stuff John, yes I read your comment somewhere else, forgotten now where I read it – LOL!
The only problem there was so much traffic I could barely get my foot down, but the car felt so eager to get going.
Fingers crossed eh? Enjoy your car once again!
Good luck Paul. Let’s hope our cars are now ok. Mine drives and sounds great as I’m sure yours does. 🙂
Cheers John, well let’s hope so eh? Any problem now, and I will seriously have an issue then, but I won’t go there!
I saw my original salesman today, he recognised my car as they have so few GTIs in and he saw them dismantling the engine. 😮
He asked me what they had been doing to it, and I gave him the story. He was not aware of these problems, or so he says!
Keep us posted anyway and good luck, hoping these oil issues will soon be consigned to the history bin!
Got to say this Polo R launch, which isn’t what it seems. Apparently you can have any engine variant, though maybe not ours, with the R styling outside/inside. Well after spending nearly 3 weeks in a 1.2 engine why would you bother. Naff. I worry about you VW at times, I really do.
That’s right John. I think most engines are available with the exception of the 1.4 TSI. Guess VW doesn’t want any more oil issues! 😉 It’s not even a ‘soft’ R, modre of a faker. Looks good, though.
Glad you and Paul have got your cars back – keep us all updated both on how it goes. Mini-report in evo magazine this month (with a mention of this ‘forum’ and website)! 🙂
Have today driven 200 miles to Cornwall and car was superb, did not see any smoke out exhaust! 🙂
Fantastic news, Paul. Hoorah, at last! *Everything crossed for you!*
Cheers Rich, yes it seems fine now. I am not going to judge it just yet tho. I have certainly not seen any smoke out the back.
One downer, while parked in a very narrow Cornish street I see another car has just touched it and some red paint scuff marks are present. It is very light luckily and should T cut out.
Hello all
It’s been a long while since I’ve been on here, thanks to being on holiday for all of August and now catching up on the backlog at work!
Shame to hear about the ongoing oil saga some of you are experiencing. Diarising the problems is a must to help challenge the reasonableness of the dealer’s response. Hope you all get good news soon.
I’m now up to 3,000 miles in mine with another 500 to add by the weekend. So far mine has barely used any oil and I check it very regularly.
Still loving the car – I averaged 53 mpg on a 100+ mile journey on Saturday. Granted the next journey was a bit more exuberant and returned mid 30s, but it’s pretty frugal when not pushing it too much. Most my driving is cruising motorways, which is why the Polo made so much sense for me over its competitors.
Read the “lifer” Evo review the other week. Will keep an eye out for their car as i drive close to their HQs most weeks. Still yet to see another GTI on the road since getting mine (early July), despite lots of miles. Saw a white 5-door in early 2011 and that’s it (save for the ones i saw at VW garages whilst test driving)!
Hope you all get yours sorted very soon.
Joe
Hi Joe,
Great to hear from you, wondered where you had ‘disappeared’ to! Good to hear that your GTI is running well, I would not anticipate any problems (oil related) with yours, especially the fact you have already done 3000 miles and have hardly used any. It’s funny, I only have 3,500 on the clock having owned it since last December, but we do have another car as well.
We are getting probably about 42 mpg as an average overall, and can sneak it over 50 if you are light-footed, but it is pretty good considering the performance on offer.
As you may have read it appears to be so far so good with the piston ring upgrades, but it is still too early to pass judgement.
An agreement with you about the rarity of GTIs, I have seen 2, a black and a Shadow Blue but that’s it! Hope they stay rare!
So far so good with the piston ring upgrade, I did another 200 miles yesterday (driving back from Cornwall) and I saw no oil smoke and the oil level appears to be at the max. Still. The exhaust itself is not looking quite so black and sooty, so it bodes well!
Hi Paul, that’s good news then. I haven’t seen any smoke on hard acceleration but still monitoring oil consumption. Was very pleased with a VW UK manager who told me to contact them straight away if problem returns and “we’ll take it from there”. Let’s just say that they are fully aware of such problems.
Hi guys
I have done close to 7000kms in my Polo GTI. In that time I’ve used 2 pints of oil – does that seem reasonable?
Hi Marc, that sounds absolutely fine. So in my neck of the woods that is about 4,400 miles and 1.14 litres. That is well within the guidelines, so I don’t think you have any oil related issues. Obviously keep an eye on it, but I would expect consumption to settle further as mileage increases.
Thanks Paul,
Yeah, I think it’s OK. I filled her up today and the oil was around three-quarters to the top. I checked out a couple of sites last night and noticed that the Audis also struggle a little with the oil issue, so I don’t think there is any reason to worry. I feel you guys got a Monday or Friday car. 🙂 I understand the pain though.
With a turbo motor it seems in general that it does do a little extra oil, and add a supercharger I think it magnifies it. To be honest Volkswagen does mention it in the manual as discussed ’bout the oil use being heavy initially. I am in South Africa, I believe my car was assembled in Spain, and my only problem I’ve had with it is too much air gets in at the driver door so winter is a nightmare, and I whack it around a lot so she’s doing ok. 🙂
I honestly do hope you guys get more joy and peace of mind.
Best regards,
Marc
Hi John
It’s good to be back on and catching up on things, but hopefully lots more positive news on its way for you lot.
Up to 3,600 miles now and still not put any oil in. Went as quick as I have been in it last night, which was great fun, but I’ll keep checking the level!
I seem to spend most my journeys keeping an eye out for other GTIs – see 100s of Polos of all ages, but still no current GTIs. Seem to get good interest from Golf GTI drivers, and I see a lot of Mk 6 GTIs on my travels. Still glad I opted for this version mind!
Hope your cars are back at their best!
Hi Joe,
Glad you are enjoying your car and aren’t experiencing oil issues. (There must be one or two of you out there). 🙂
I did see one like mine parked up in town and a couple at dealerships but that’s it. There’ll be even less of them on the road if they don’t sort out the engine/oil probs.
Think mine is using oil again. Oh god…enough already!!
You’re kidding John? How many miles have you done since the rings were renewed? I think it will still use a bit of while the rings bed in, but certainly not at the rate it was using pre-ring upgrade.
I have not done many miles since last week so still can’t make a judgement call on mine. I sincerely hope yours is OK and not a problem again. 🙁
Phew! May have been a blip, oil levels back to normal when I checked today.
Don’t do this to us John! 🙂
I know Paul, I’ve never been so paranoid about a bit of oil and a dipstick. 🙂
I think I have worn the dipstick out John!
All been quiet here the last few days which is probably a good thing as it may mean everyone is happy with their cars. I have just checked the oil again and pleased to report all is well after about 600 miles, no sign of usage.
I had a little prod around the engine bay though while I was at it, just to ensure everything was safe and sound and noticed that one of the connecting hoses was a bit loose. To describe it (as you look into the engine bay) there is a thick black hose connection from the front grill leading through to the air filter/box (right read of engine bay). The connection here was quite loose and also the entire air box seems to wobble around on its mounts.
Not sure if this is normal, this is why I was not happy with the engine/gearbox coming out. Car drives fine but curious to know if your if this is the same on your cars?
Cheers!
Hi Paul,
My mate who built his own Golf GTI said that they don’t need to take out the engine to do the ring upgrade. You can work from the top and bottom of the engine. The engine and gearbox may not have been removed. Don’t think mine was.
Hi John, many thanks for that.
Yes – they told me that they would be removing engine/gearbox to do the work but perhaps they didn’t? It would have been nice to have spoken to the technicians when I picked it up but they were not available. I will get that hose connection checked at first service (Dec), I don’t believe it is connected with supercharger/turbo otherwise I am sure there would be a major impact on performance without doubt!
Guys, just a quick info.
After my engine has been replaced I have even bigger problems with second engine. It has been at dealer, an official oil consumption test has been done with their professional driver. My new engine is consuming 1.1L of oil per 1000km!!!
This is totally sick. I am having legal dispute with dealer and my request is new car or full refund. I won’t allow them to put me third engine in a car. It still does not have total of 15000km.
Hello CroTom,
I was beginning to think this thread had finished, for now at least! I am sorry that you are still encountering problems. Yes, that is definitely a case for rejecting the car. You can’t keep getting replacement engines. How can the 2nd engine also be faulty?
Yes, 1.1 litres per 1000 miles is way, way too much.
From my side it is positive news a least, I have done over 900 miles now (since piston ring replacement) with no noticeable oil use.
Let us know how you get on but I am in agreement, don’t accept a 3rd engine. VW have had ample opportunity to get it right.
Screw the oil consumption issue… something’s up with my rear suspension, getting it sorted now.
Can you describe your problems with suspension?
Only issue I have is a need for a new rear bumper, as someone drove into the back on mine whilst entering a car park – driving up a steep ramp which continuously goes round to the right and she said she was looking in the back (whilst driving) as her son was screaming! I have dealt with her insurers, as mine wanted to involve a claims management company with credit hire charges. New rear bumper from my dealer is £740 + 3 days hire car charges from Enterprise for auto Fiesta or Corsa. Seems much more reasonable.
Though a colleague who drives an A3 Cabrio was in a non-fault accident the other week and was given a Merc CLS 350 for a few weeks as her courtesy car. And it came direct from the other driver’s insurers, as they felt the charges by her insurers for a 320d were too high! Feel I should have hung out for a GT-R! But I guess that’s why everyone’s premiums are so high.
Glad to hear yours seems sorted John!
No Joe, it’s all going very wrong. Dealing with VW is like throwing punches in the dark. Engine to be stripped again to see what’s going on, re oil consumption.
Long-term love affair with VW is over… crap service, won’t buy another!! (Did you get that VW?!)
I thought you were reporting no more problems, John. When did the last ones start? Thought you and Paul were now sorted.
Interestingly, two of VW’s press cars (not the one I had) have had problems, with one being run by MSN having had the piston ring upgrade…
No it hasn’t worked Rich. I’ve recently completed another 600 mile oil consumption test and now the VW tech team instruct my new dealer (the old one sold up, talk about bad timing) to strip the engine to check the bores and rings.
I’m quite sure VW group realise that they have a problem with the award-winning engine.
Paul seems relatively happy with his at the moment, reporting a slight drop in oil level I believe.
Hi Rich/John,
Yes, as I think you are aware mine seems to be ok, I have just noticed today that the oil level has dropped just off from the max mark after just over 1000 miles. I am hoping this is just down to normal use and it won’t suddenly drop like yours has John. We still only have 4200 on the clock so the engine is still bedding in.
There is also a slightly annoying rattle from behind the dashboard, I wish I knew where it was coming from, it sounds like raindrops on the windscreen (even though there aren’t any). I suspect it could be at the bottom of the windscreen area, it seems to bond onto this plastic ‘panel’ thing in the engine bay, it seems looser on the nearside, that’s what I think anyway.
Rapidly coming up to the first service, I am sure it is due an oil change – LOL, so I will mention the rattle then.
Yes – as we have discussed many times before, there seems to be no consistency with these oil issues.
Hi guys, I am back from a couple of months travelling.
I am going to re-put in my order for the Polo GTI. I test drove the Golf GTI today, still prefer the Polo though.
9 weeks lead time I have been told.
John – sorry to hear that the oil problems have not been fixed. I reckon now that you must insist on a brand new engine. I checked my oil yesterday and it is halfway down the dipstick after 7000 miles, with the majority of this being in the first 3000 miles.
I will be booking mine in at the dealers though – there is a lot of rattling coming from the sunroof mechanism and the passenger door, which is starting to get right up my nose.
Car still at dealer while they decide what next.
One guy on another forum has said that he is to have a complete engine rebuild, pistons, piston rings, cylinder head etc. All this done without the need for an oil consumption test. Big problems.
Yes – I just read that John, I don’t know, so complete engine rebuild now and no oil test! There are quite a few demonstrator GTIs now for sale on the VW website I noticed.
PS My dealer (like yours) has also just been taken over by another VW dealership, I have actually booked mine in for a service at an alternative dealer while the transition is taking place.
I am contemplating asking the dealer to measure the oil that comes out of it to give me an idea of how the ‘fix’ is working. Not sure if they will oblige in doing that though.
Good luck with that Paul.
These engine rebuilds must cost a small fortune… would love to know how much. It’s the only crumb of comfort I have, knowing it’s costing them!
Update on mine.
Have been told VW are to replace the whole bottom half of the engine.
John – my optimism about my car may be about to be shattered. This morning I saw some puffs of oil smoke out the exhaust when pulling away, first time I have seen this since ‘the fix’.
It is a drastic improvement for sure, but I am certain now that there must be an underlying design flaw here. I was somehow hoping against hope that mine was fixed. Can’t believe it, 1200 miles in, will check the dipstick in a moment and will advise my dealer when it goes in for normal service in 2 weeks’ time.
Car itself still only has 4400 on it, so still may use a little more, but you should not be seeing oil smoke out the back.
Just checked oil, it is still at the top of the hatching marks, as we know though the dipstick is not linear, think it takes quite a while from a full sump to show a drop on the dipstick.
Paul, what a nightmare. Interesting though that the oil is still at max. For oil smoke to show it’s obvious some of it is still getting passed the rings.
Mine had been fine briefly after the fix but then…
Not all cars seem to react exactly but there is a general theme going on. If you are pals with an oil baron then no probs otherwise get back to your dealer, it could start drinking it again.
Yes, I have been out this afternoon and done about 35 miles in it, put some revs on it and did not see any smoke at all. Like you though John, I can’t be doing with this nonsense. As I recall, I think you got to about 1200 miles before the oil level dropped (on the dipstick at least).
I have asked my new dealer (previous one now taken over), if they will measure the oil when it’s in for service. I don’t want another 1000km test again, I bet though this won’t be straightforward as they can’t be sure how much it started off with; “full” will probably not be a good enough answer.
I used to get the smoke when pulling away from junctions, engine just idling then a power burst needed, not when driving hard in a straight line.
Got GTI back today. Have had a new engine installed, courtesy of VW, complete with the revised engine block. Fingers crossed. Have missed the car…still a lovely thing to drive.
Well as some of you may have read on another Polo Forum :-), I think I am resigned to the fact that my piston ring upgrade has not worked.
Certainly the new rings improved the situation but recently I am seeing the oil level drop again and the tell-tale smoke out the exhaust, I don’t know why I did not see this earlier.
I do low mileage (as have 2 cars) so it takes quite a while to get to ths stage.
1st scheduled service on Monday, I am hoping I can use this as an opportunity for the dealer to work out how much has been used as I have not topped it up since the ring upgrade in September (1300 miles ago).
Paul, I had the same problem. I had engine replaced and the same problems started with replaced engine. But, after 10000 to 15000 kilometers, oil usage started to reduce rapidly. Is it possible that break-in period lasts a lot longer that we are accustomed to? I am not sure what to think anymore.
Hi CroTom, yes my car is in the dealer today for its first normal service. I have mentioned to them that there still seems to be some oil burning. I accept that this engine may use more during the early stages of its life, but it’s the smoke out the exhaust I don’t find acceptable. It is a vast improvement since the rings were replaced but I am still not convinced that this fixes the problem properly.
Hi CroTom/All, ok, had my car serviced for the 1st time today, it was due an oil change – LOL, had not been done for 3 months!
Anyway – my dealer did measure as best they could what came out of the car, and they deduced that it had used 0.8 litre in 1350 miles, which to them (and myself) was acceptable, particularly for a low mileage engine, don’t forget I am only on 4,500 miles!
They have given me the option of doing another 1000km (625 mile) test to see where it is after that, but after today, I don’t see that there is any point, unless I can see a drastic change in the consumption.
With that in mind I will keep an eye on it, but not worry about it. I do low mileage anyway so for the moment at least, I am going to accept the situation. My piston ring replacement does appear to have been a lot more successful than others (John/CroTom) and I think you are right (CroTom), these engines I think do take a considerable mileage to bed down.
Can’t explain the occasional oil smoke, but for now, I will see how it goes and report back on here anything that may be of interest.
I think we are getting there with the issues, its just a shame it involves countless trips to the dealer and driving around in 1.2’s!
Good luck guys!
Well, no posts on here for a little while, but I am concerned again about mine. After the piston ring upgrade, mine seemed to be fine but since it’s service a month ago, it seems to be drinking more oil again, I just don’t understand it, I keep thinking it will improve with more miles.
Today while out and about, I saw 2 plumes of blue oil smoke out the exhaust, worryingly as well though, there was a very slight hesitation with the engine causing the car to ‘bog down’ ever so slightly, not good.
I was trying to adopt a more philosophical view on all of this but I can’t ignore it, looks like I will be down the dealer again soon. I am on a 600 mile test at the moment anyway. 200 to go. Not a happy bunny.

I have just ordered one of these and somewhat concerned to read about all the problems.
Does anyone know if brand new cars have now had this resolved?
Thanks!
Hi everybody,
Have not posted for a long time. I have done 4.5k miles and used about 2.5l oil from new. Going to book my first service and voice my complaint about oil consumption. They can’t say I have not given it a chance. I have also not been driving the car hard all the time. Only on occasion. I also used to swear by VW but I doubt I will feel the same again.
Hope everyone is keeping well and safe. I am going to do battle with my dealer tomorrow. Will keep you posted.
Well, I had a new engine under warranty which apparently has a lower block. Latest oil figures are 1 litre used in 2200 miles which is a vast improvement on the previous engine. I’m happier with this engine than the one I had before. The car drives beautifully, but then it did when it was drinking oil too.
Talk is that VW are redesigning the pistons for this engine. Who knows. One thing I do know is that we’ve been the guinea pigs in all this. In the end, the warranty did look after me and VW customer services were first class in chasing up my case.
In answer to PaulC, make certain your engine has the revised block.
Just when I thought this thread was dead in the water, we have some activity again! Mind you that may not necessarily be a good thing! 🙂
Hi – all, since my last post (on this forum at least), I have had my 625-mile oil check at my dealer who informed that all was OK. That did surprise me as I had seen blue puffs of smoke out the exhaust on occasion, apparently it had used 0.4/litre in the 625 miles.
So I have been sent away again with an apparently healthy car. To be honest, being a 2-car family – I don’t do enough miles in it to report back quickly, only done 300 miles since early Feb. In that time I have not seen any smoke, but the oil level seems to have dropped a tad on the dipstick.
As John says, there is supposed to be an engine re-design for MY2013 which will be launched in May. As for a generic recall on this issue, I very much doubt that would happen, so in the meantime it is a case of revised piston rings (in my case), or in more severe cases a new engine with revised lower block.
Hi Paul C and all
Been a long time since I have been on here too.
Paul C, mine is an ’11-plate registered last July. I have done just under 10k and put in 1 litre of castrol about 5k ago. This is within normal tolerance and it’s barely used any since then.
I have driven it very hard at times and gently cruise a lot too – I’m rarely in a rush to get to work!
I am still hugely impressed by the car and don’t regret buying it. There was a lot on my short list and I couldn’t be happier.
It’s actually going in for its first service tomorrow and will hopefully come back with a clean bill of health.
I think if you are getting a brand new one or recently registered one you should be fine,so fingers crossed for you!
Hi all,
Went to the dealer and showed the amount of oil used. At that time I had done 4262 miles and used almost 2.5l of oil. Because I do low mileage, I was put on a time/distance service plan. The engineer assured me that the oil used is within the predicted acceptable usage and said that I should come back if the oil consumption gets worse. The car will get her first service on her second birthday. I can honestly say it looks like the consumption is evening out a little. I didn’t push the car hard at all from new to about a couple thousand miles. The exhaust no longer is as sooty. The oily residue has also gone. Will post again after I wash the car and exhaust tail piece, so I can see if the black residue returns – indicating that oil is perhaps being burnt to excess.
