You’d be forgiven for thinking that the new MY2015 Polo looks the same as its predecessor. While the new model is indeed a thorough refresh of the outgoing car, there are subtle changes.

Volkswagen states that over 30 per cent of buyers bought Polo 6R on its looks alone (compared to the 19 per cent of its predecessor), so has wisely resisted tinkering with the external appearance too much.

The front bumper now sports a redesigned lower grille with new fog lamps and a full-width chrome strip adorning the recess. The grille is now three-slat, with another chrome strip marking out the lower most bar on higher-specification models.

Staying at the front, there are new headlamps, with some models gaining LED units as an option, a first for the supermini class. Volkswagen says that they create a ‘distinctive light signature’.

There are six new alloy wheel designs to mark out the refreshed model over its predecessor, too, while a palette of 15 colours add a splash of style to the exterior.

Eight are new – ‘Sunset Red Metallic’ and ‘Corn Flower Blue’ seen here show of the new Polo’s subtle exterior changes to good effect. ‘Blue Silk Metallic’ (hitherto a BlueGT option only), ‘Clear Water Blue Metallic’ (BlueMotion only), ‘Pure White’, and ‘Urano Grey’ are added to the standard Polo hatch’s wardrobe.

‘Honey Orange Metallic’ and ‘Titanium Beige Metallic’ can be chosen to make the new CrossPolo stand out when it is launched in the coming months.
